| Introduction Introduction |
One noon in April, I stepped off the train at Takao Station to visit ceramic artist Kenichi Iwase. The crisp, clean air, so different from Shinjuku, is refreshing and puts me in a great mood. Iwase Pottery Studio is located on the far left edge of Tokyo, just a short distance west of Yamanashi Prefecture, and is situated in a lovely old house that is over 100 years old. When I visited Kasuga, I heard nightingales singing "ho-hokecho," and the last of the red camellias were still in bloom.
Even now, at the age of 80, Mr. Iwase continues to dedicate himself to pottery making, primarily focusing on Korean-style tea bowls. The subtitle, "Seeking the Flowers I Have Not Yet Seen," is a poem by the monk Saigyo, and it embodies his desire to always try new things. This exhibition, the first at our gallery in three years, will feature approximately 100 works, including tea ceremony ceramics. Looking at his latest work, the ash-glazed red tea bowl shown above, I can't help but feel that the way he crafted the rim is one of the charms of his tea bowls these days. At the pottery studio, we savored the delicious home-cooked meal prepared by his wife, and enjoyed a delicious cup of matcha tea brewed by Mr. Iwase himself. We were deeply impressed by his dedication to the tea ceremony. During this period, we will also be hosting a tea ceremony where he will serve as the host for the first time in his life.
