Mr. Iwase is a ceramic artist who has his home and studio in a lush, green area on the outskirts of Hachioji, Tokyo. They live happily together as a family in a traditional house that is over 100 years old, and this year they celebrated their 77th birthday. In the past, he created works with unique glazes such as persimmon porcelain and black porcelain, but recently he has put these works aside and started making Korean tea bowls such as kohiki, irabo, hakeme, and his latest work, Ido.
When asked why he chose Korean tea bowls now, Mr. Iwase replied, "One of the things that inspired me to pursue pottery was the Ido tea bowl. More than half a century has passed since then, and I want to embody my current view of tea bowls. I will continue to work diligently towards my long-held dream of challenging myself with Japanese tea bowls such as Kohiki and Ido." There are many famous ancient Korean tea bowls, and they inevitably get compared to these, so I think it must be difficult to make them, but I dare to make one in the Reiwa eraTaking on the challenge of Korean tea bowlsI felt a connection to his approach to pottery making.
And the tea bowl shown above, which you sent for the invitation to this exhibition, shows hints of ancient Korean pottery, but I was delighted to see that it is clearly a modern Iwase tea bowl from the Reiwa era. This bowl has a dignified appearance, and the potter's wheel marks and the beautiful kairagi (plum blossom-like glaze) around the base make it a truly exquisite piece. His signature style, kohiki ware, features a smooth, flowing white glaze that feels gentle and mellow, fitting comfortably in the hand.
This exhibition, the first at our gallery in almost two years, will feature 100 works, including our latest Korean tea bowls. Mr. Iwase, who has a gentle personality and is highly respected by pottery enthusiasts, will be present at the gallery every day during the exhibition. It's the season of light snow, and the weather is getting colder, but I would be delighted if you would take a look at it and give me your feedback.

| Biography Biography | Born in Tokyo in 1946. 1966: Studied under Professor Yasunari Matsui. In 1968, I studied under Professor Seimei Tsuji and Professor Kyou Tsuji In 1972, an independent kiln was built in Hachioji City. In 1985, he was selected for the 8th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and has been selected for numerous other exhibitions since then. 1986: Solo exhibition at Matsuya Ginza; 29 exhibitions held since. In 1998, he was selected for the 45th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and has been selected for numerous other exhibitions since then. 2009: Selected for the 3rd Kikuchi Biennale Exhibition. 2022: Received the Oribe Encouragement Award at the 14th Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition. Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association |
