"Take a leisurely stroll in Shinjuku like a grown-up."

These are the words we received from Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata in 1969 when we opened "Kakiden, a Kyoto-style Kaiseki restaurant in Shinjuku." Now, 40 years later, we at "Kakiden Gallery" are striving to live by these very words.

Kakiden Gallery began in 1976 in Shinjuku East Exit, Tokyo, as a gallery primarily exhibiting and selling ceramics. Then, in 2008, more than 32 years after its opening, it relocated next to Shinjuku Station, starting anew as "a gallery in Shinjuku where adults can enjoy a leisurely stroll." For the relocation, we commissioned the design of the new gallery to the renowned contemporary architect, Mr. Yukio Hashimoto, resulting in a stylish and modern Japanese-style gallery.

Currently, driven by our desire to introduce as many artists from all over Japan as possible, we hold approximately 33 exhibitions a year, conducting our business daily with the sole focus on bringing joy to our customers. While our main focus is on tea ceremony ceramics, we also sell and exhibit ceramics, lacquerware, textiles, metalwork, and paintings.

We are still a fledgling gallery, and being located underground might make it seem intimidating to enter. However, our staff is working diligently to create a sophisticated, modern Japanese atmosphere that belies its underground location, where you can quietly enjoy a dialogue with the artwork. We hope that through your encounter with the art, you will enjoy a refined detour in Shinjuku.
