| Introduction Introduction |
Mr. Iwase is a kind and gentle person. He began his career as a ceramic artist in the 1960s, studying under Yasunari Matsui and Seimei Tsuji I believe it was around 1998 that I first came across his work at a solo exhibition at Matsuya Ginza, where I remember being drawn to some iron-glazed tableware. Eventually, he started attending every tea ceremony I hosted at Kakiden, and he even began making tea bowls for the tea ceremony. However, unlike tableware, he struggled to grasp the subtle "space" that a tea bowl should have, and it was a very difficult task for him. However, the tea bowl I saw just the other day had an interesting pattern of iron glaze application, and it seemed like it was finally made to be worthy of drinking tea from, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. I hope you will approach the challenge with even deeper feelings. Seizo Hayashiya |
