Introduction
Introduction

What comes to mind when you think of Kumamoto?

Kumamoto Castle, Mount Aso, Kumamon, karashi renkon (mustard lotus root), basashi (horse sashimi), Taiwanese TSMC, Suizenji Park, and Lord Hosokawa...

今回、ご紹介する細川護光さんは、肥後細川家の19代目の御当主であり、この熊本の地で懸命に作陶に挑んでおられます。

In addition to Raku tea bowls, Raku tea caddies, flower vases and other vessels, and Ido tea bowls, Shigaraki-style pieces are also produced.

I was very pleased to receive the latest red Raku tea bowl (pictured above) that you sent me for use in the invitation. It is a bowl of great dignity and style.

Despite it being November, the sun was still dazzlingly bright on this day, and I flew to Kumamoto.

We drove our rental car west from Kumamoto Airport to the Hosokawa residence in Kumamoto City. Upon arriving at the residence, we were greeted by Professor Morimitsu, who was beaming with a wide smile.

We're having a strategy meeting for this exhibition on the veranda overlooking the garden inside the mansion.

Beyond this garden lies Taisho-ji Temple, where Lord Hosokawa Yusai and Lord Hosokawa Sansai are buried. It truly evokes a sense of the pure history of the Hosokawa family, and makes you stand a little more respectfully.

Recently, he obtained qualifications as a Shinto priest and is extremely busy as the chief priest of Izumi Shrine in Suizenji Park.

The deities enshrined at Izumi Shrine are said to be the successive generations of the Hosokawa family, so I'm sure your ancestors are very pleased that Mr. Morimitsu is serving as the chief priest of Izumi Shrine.

I am deeply impressed that he also serves as the chairman of the board of directors of the Eisei Bunko in Mejiro, Tokyo.

We are deeply grateful that, to our great honor, you have also served as the chairman of the "Tea Ceremony Enthusiasts' Club," a research and practice group for the tea ceremony organized by our company, for the past five years.

After leaving the Hosokawa residence, I made my way to the Izumi Shrine in question.

It was my first time visiting Suizenji Park, and I was amazed by its beautiful scenery. After walking for a while, I came across Izumi Shrine.

Amidst the serene and dignified atmosphere, I too offered my prayers.

As I admired the cute carp in the pond and the magnificent pine trees, I ventured further into the park and came across a splendid bronze statue of Lord Yusai. I was delighted to find that this statue bore a striking resemblance to Mr. Goko.

Now, for this exhibition, which is the seventh of its kind at our gallery, we will be presenting sake vessels and tableware, primarily focusing on tea ceremony ceramics such as red Raku, black Raku, and Ido ware.

I apologize for bothering you during this busy time of year, but I would be grateful if you could take a look at it.

Shop owner: Takashi Yasuda (Secretary-General of the Tea Ceremony Enthusiasts' Club)
