| Introduction Introduction |
Recently, our gallery received a shoe-shaped tea bowl (No. 2 below) inscribed with the words "Love is Art," and flower vases (No. 3 & 4 below) engraved with the character for "love," from Dohei Fujinoki ware ceramic artist Dohei Fujinoki. I was surprised, but also pleased that it was so typical of Mr. Tsuchihira, and I felt that now, more than ever, when we worry about the harsh realities of the Reiwa era, we should all freely discuss love and art.
Mr. Tsuchihira is a veteran ceramic artist who is diligently working on Karatsu-style tea ceremony pottery. With a unique sensibility, they create delightful and charming works that bring joy to everyone. The smooth, gentle glaze and innovative forms captivate the hearts of pottery enthusiasts. The kiln is located in Yobuko, an area west of Karatsu Station that is famous for its squid. Within the lush grounds of the kiln, there is also a thatched-roof tea room, where Mr. Tsuchihira enjoys practicing the Sohen-ryu style of tea ceremony. Because the tea ceremony is a part of her daily life, her tea is unique, her pairings are refined, and she skillfully blends modern and antique tea utensils.
Now, for this exhibition, our gallery's first in two years and marking our fifth exhibition, the theme is "Shosho - 'Love'," and we will be presenting our latest works, including tea bowls and flower vases. I apologize for bringing this up during this time of intense late summer heat, but both Professor Tsuchihira and I are looking forward to discussing love and art with you all.
