| Introduction Introduction |
On a day in October when the heat had finally subsided, I headed to Karatsu under a clear autumn sky. It is to meet Mr. Tsuchihira, whom I deeply respect. Despite my late arrival due to prior commitments, Mr. and Mrs. Tsuchihira greeted me with beaming smiles. I am both humbled and incredibly grateful.
Well, first things first, let's have a smoke, so I accepted the invitation and went to the hermitage in the back. We enjoyed delicious chestnut and red bean paste made by his wife, and Mr. Tsuchihira himself served us tea. As always, the way you skillfully combined antique art with your own creations, and the delicious tea, helped to wash away the fatigue of my long journey. In the world of tea ceremony, combining antique art with contemporary crafts is a challenge that I, as an inexperienced practitioner, struggle with, but Ms. Tsuchihira handles it effortlessly and skillfully.
Now, in this exhibition, our gallery's first in about two years, we will be presenting over 100 works, including our latest tea ceremony ceramics. I absolutely love the unique atmosphere that Tsuchihira's works exude, which are one of a kind even within the Karatsu ware tradition. I think the beautiful glaze and firing characteristics are wonderful. As in previous exhibitions, the delicate and beautiful works of up-and-coming Western-style painter Tomo Shimizu will be displayed on the walls, adding a special touch to this exhibition. I apologize for bothering you during this busy time, but I would be grateful if you could take a look.
