Introduction
Introduction

A few years ago, as I was working and listening to the radio as usual, I heard the words of my respected teacher, Fumio Takada: "Rakugo is the affirmation of karma."

Those were the words of Tatekawa Danshi.

I immediately read Master Danshi's "Modern Rakugo Theory, Part 2," and learned about the meaning of affirming karma and the reason why classic rakugo from the Edo and Meiji periods is still loved today. That's why people today empathize with flawed protagonists from different eras with different social customs.

In the world of crafts, motifs are often found in nature, but while I understand its beauty, I have no desire to recreate it with my own hands.

As I naturally sought the source of my creative work within myself, I took Master Danshi's words to heart and decided to express the flawed, yet essential, aspects of my inner self—the parts I'm too embarrassed to show in today's compliance-driven society—through the color pink. After all, when Kato-chan delivered his signature line, "Just a little bit," there was a pink spotlight.

I wonder to what extent my work will be affirmed in the world of the tea ceremony, which has a longer and more continuous tradition than classical rakugo (traditional Japanese storytelling).

We invite you to view and comment on this work.
