| Introduction Introduction |
White porcelain fruit pulp
I've been struck by how Nami Takahashi has consistently shown interest in unglazed stoneware in her words over the past few years. Judging from the recent development of his style, the virtues of unglazed pottery may actually be the core of what the artist has always grappled with, digested, and confronted in relation to his own work.
This white porcelain possesses a dignified elegance, yet also a sense of spaciousness, as if the clay itself is breathing from within. The pleated shape changes its appearance depending on the shades of light and shadow it casts. Works using pearls or platinum glaze showcase luster as a texture. On the other hand, in works molded from coarser clay, the artist pursues the mottled texture of ceramics, as if tracing back to the terracotta he once created in Italy.
For Takahashi, the fruit, which also serves as a source of inspiration for his sculptures, ripens while being sweet, juicy, and sometimes disturbing its surroundings. The inner depths that have supported the pristine, pure white world of his work are now slowly beginning to seep out.
