On a cold December day as the seventh year of the Reiwa era drew to a close,Tsutomu Nakazato of Mikawachi Pottery (↓)I went to Nagasaki to visit Mr./Ms.
I rented a car at Nagasaki Airport and drove for an hour, heading north-northwest, with the sparkling Omura Bay on my left. We arrived at the Hirado Matsuyama Kiln, where he serves as the 16th head of the family. I was so happy when Pero the Shiba Inu greeted me with a "Woof!" We entered the elegant and beautiful building, and the planning meeting for this exhibition began. Afterward, we viewed the artwork in a lovely gallery, and were given a tour of the workshop, including the painting process, the kiln, and the potter's wheel.
Tsukasa Tsuki is a ceramic artist who has gained popularity for his works featuring underglaze blue designs on white porcelain. His paintings range from Chinese children, which were his father's specialty, to wave patterns, dragons, flowers, necklaces, cloisonné, and fish.
I, in particularTea bowl with a Seigaiha wave patternI really like (product No. 1 below) and use it often. From the opening to the inside (the image of the stamp portion of the direct mail), the endlessly continuing Seigaiha pattern is endlessly fascinating and even inspires a sense of awe. Furthermore, he not only paints the pottery himself, but also makes the bodies, and apparently he works on painting from morning until evening, and then on the potter's wheel from evening until night.
This exhibition will showcase over 150 beautiful new works featuring intricate underglaze blue decoration on white porcelain. Lately, I've been fond of works using a dark blue color called sumi-gosu, like the large plate shown above. I will also be presenting a new piece (the left side of work No. 29 below) in which I have depicted the "Shippo-mon" pattern in six directions instead of the usual four, which I am showing to the world for the first time. Although the festive mood of the New Year's celebrations still lingers, I would be delighted if you would take a look at it and offer your frank and unreserved guidance.

| Biography Biography | Born in 1967 in Mikawachi Town as the eldest son of Katsutoshi Nakazato , the 15th generation of the Hirado Matsuyama family. 1988: Graduated from Arita Ceramic College, studied under Hayao Yoshioka of Toukodo. 1991: Studied Hirado blue and white porcelain under his father, Hirado Matsuyama. Studied porcelain wheel throwing under Mitsuhisa Ueno. In 2013, he was designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and certified as a Traditional Craftsman. |
