The paintings of Chinese children at Hirado Matsuyama Kiln are exceptionally cute. The facial expressions, the movements of the hands and feet, and the lines of the blue and white porcelain that depict them—how incredibly lifelike they are! When I first visited the kiln, I saw countless small stencils, both old and new, depicting smiling Chinese children and their movements as they run, play, and turn around, all neatly placed beside the painting workbench in the workshop. This is how the Chinese children of Matsuyama Kiln are passed down, updated, and inherited.
It is the tip of each brush that breathes life into the paper stencils of Chinese children. Each one depicts a Chinese child, arabesque patterns, dragons, fish, and wave patterns... I look forward to the luxury of seeing together the tradition and innovation of Mikawachi ware, expressed through the gentle negative space, meticulous detail, and the fresh perspectives of the third generation of Matsuyama Kiln, each with their own brushstrokes.
Yumi Mori (Ceramics Researcher)
Mikawachi Pottery Porcelain pottery made in the Mikawachi district of Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Originating in the early Edo period, it was then called "Hirado ware." For 400 years, they have continued to preserve exquisite techniques such as underglaze blue paintings of Chinese children, intricate craftsmanship, and openwork carving. |
| Biography Biography | ▶15th generation Hirado Matsuyama Katsutoshi Nakazato Nakazato Katsutoshi Born in 1942 in Mikawachi-cho, Sasebo City. 1957: Became a disciple of the 13th generation Hirado Matsuyama (grandfather Nakazato Matsunosuke). In 1971, I was commissioned to create and deliver a Hirado vase with a design of Chinese children as a gift for His Majesty the Emperor. In 1984, he was designated by the Minister of International Trade and Industry and certified as a Traditional Craftsman. Designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Sasebo City in 1997. In 2018, the Mikawachi-yaki Hirado-style blue and white porcelain technique was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Nagasaki Prefecture. ▶ Tsutomu Nakazato Nakazato Tsutomu Born in 1967 in Mikawachi Town as the eldest son of Katsutoshi Nakazato . 1988: Graduated from Arita Ceramic College, studied under Hayao Yoshioka of Toukodo. In 1991, he studied Hirado blue and white porcelain under his father, Hirado Matsuyama, and porcelain wheel throwing under Ueno Mitsuhisa. In 2013, he was designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and certified as a Traditional Craftsman. ▶ Akishi Nakazato Nakazato Akishi Born in 1997 in Mikawachi Town as the eldest son of Tsutomu Nakazato . After graduating from the Design Department of Arita Technical High School in 2016, I underwent technical training at the Arita Ceramics Technology Center. Joined Made in Japan Project Co., Ltd. in 2018. 2020: Studied under his grandfather, Katsutoshi, and his father, Tsukito Tsutomu. |
