| Introduction Introduction |
On a hot and humid day in June, I bought an "extremely hard ice cream" on the platform at Shinagawa Station, jumped on the Nozomi Shinkansen, and headed straight for Kyoto. I was there to strategize for this solo exhibition with Yohei Yoshiha, a kettle maker who is the same age as me. Yohei-san, with a big smile on his face, went out of his way to come and meet me at the Hachijo Exit of Kyoto Station. It was a joyous moment to celebrate our long-awaited reunion. The place he chose for our strategy meeting was a delicious Japanese restaurant run by his husband, who is also a classmate of his. Well, I was offered a drink (Yohei is really good at persuading people), and before I knew it, I was drinking in the middle of the day (I'm sorry). We exchanged tea and talked about all sorts of things: our creative work, my father's life before us, the current situation in Kyoto, and our thoughts on the tea ceremony these days...
As a Kyoto kettle maker, Yohei not only creates kettles and other items by casting, which involves pouring molten iron into molds, but also by forging, which involves hammering a single sheet of metal to create vessels and other items. As you know, casting is a very time-consuming process that is completed through a series of steps. The fresh, brand-new creation shown above, which arrived for the invitation, is apparently a teapot, and it was made with the hope that people would enjoy the tea ceremony more on a table or countertop rather than on a tatami mat. I fell in love with its beautiful appearance at first sight. It has good drainage and comes with a stand (furo) for warming it with solid fuel. Thus, the appeal of Yohei's works lies in their refined form and beautiful texture.
This exhibition, the first at our gallery in six years, will feature 40 new works, including metalwork pieces such as the reverse side, tea ceremony kettles, and flower vases, all befitting the Reiwa era. Yohei, who has many fans due to his kind and generous personality, will be present at the gallery every day. Whether you are familiar with the tea ceremony or not, I would be delighted if you would take a look. We apologize for the inconvenience of holding the exhibition in the extremely hot month of July, but we would like to invite you to do so.

| Biography Biography | Born in 1968 as the eldest son of the second generation Yohei. His real name is Masato. In 1985, I started working at the workshop under the previous two generations of the family. Graduated from Kyoto Junior College of Art (Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Arts) in 1991. In 1994, he apprenticed under his predecessor and began training to become a kettle maker, a family business. In 2008, he succeeded to the name of Yohei III, and held succession exhibitions in various locations including Kyoto, Tokyo, and Okayama. |
