Yohei is a young metalworker who creates tea kettles and other items entirely by hand, while preserving the history and tradition of Kyoto kettles. Normally, Kyoto kettles do not bear the maker's name, but tea masters are said to be able to identify the maker by the texture of the kettle, and the texture of the kettle made by the third-generation Yohei has a lustrous and beautiful, unique charm. I recently visited the Yoshiha Workshop in Kyoto, and was greeted with the same kind smile as always, and enjoyed a delicious cup of matcha tea. From what I've heard, there are currently only four or five kettle makers in Kyoto, including Yohei-san. I wanted to offer my support, however small it may be. The tea kettle is such an important tool in the tea ceremony that holding a tea ceremony is referred to as "putting on the kettle." In this first solo exhibition, in addition to recent works such as tea kettles, water containers, and lid rests, I will also be presenting bowls, trays, and cups that add color to everyday life. | Biography Biography | Born in 1968 as the eldest son of the second generation Yohei. Real name: Masato In 1985, I started working at the workshop under the previous two generations of the family. Graduated from Kyoto Junior College of Art (Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Arts) in 1991. In 1994, I apprenticed under my predecessor and began training to become a kettle maker, a family business. In 2008, he succeeded to the name of Yohei III and held succession exhibitions in various locations including Kyoto, Tokyo, and Okayama. |
