On a chilly day in the liminal space of spring, I visited Yohei, a kettle maker, in Kujo, Kyoto. We enjoyed a delicious cup of tea that was prepared for us, and then the two of us held a strategy meeting for this exhibition. Since we were the same age, we had endless conversations about kettles and the tea ceremony. The appeal of the tea ceremony kettles he creates lies in their dignified form and smooth, beautiful texture. As you know, cast iron kettles are made through a time-consuming and laborious process, and Yohei has poured his heart and soul into creating the new pieces he will be exhibiting at this exhibition. Sadly, his father, the previous head of the family business, passed away last year, but I think it's wonderful to see him admirably carrying on his father's legacy and striving every day to improve himself. I also feel that he is currently living in a space between humility and confidence. Now, for this exhibition, our gallery's first in three years, we will be presenting 40 new works including kettles, vases, flower vases, and other vessels. In the past, the kettle held a very important position among the tea ceremony utensils, to the point that serving as the host of a tea ceremony was referred to as "putting on the kettle." However, I feel that awareness of kettles has diminished compared to the past. Now more than ever, why not rediscover the charm of traditional Japanese kettles? I hope you will enjoy looking at it.

| Biography Biography | Born in 1968 as the eldest son of the second generation Yohei. His real name is Masato. In 1985, I started working at the workshop under the previous two generations of the family. Graduated from Kyoto Junior College of Art (Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Arts) in 1991. In 1994, he apprenticed under his predecessor and began training to become a kettle maker, a family business. In 2008, he succeeded to the name of Yohei III, and held succession exhibitions in various locations including Kyoto, Tokyo, and Okayama. |
