Introduction
Introduction

On a cold November day, I boarded a JAL flight from Haneda Airport.

I am here to visit Naoto Yano, a Karatsu ware ceramic artist whom I deeply admire.

I arrived at Fukuoka Airport and looked up at the sky, which was perfectly clear with not a single cloud in the sky, putting me in a great mood.

After gripping the steering wheel and driving towards Karatsu, passing through the awe-inspiring pine forest of Nijinomatsubara, one of Japan's three great pine groves, and arriving at Nagoya Bay overlooking the Genkai Sea, we're almost at Mr. Yano's workshop.

I apologize for being a little late for our appointment, but I am incredibly grateful to Ms. Yano for greeting me with such a big smile.

At the workshop, I was able to see wonderful new works and enjoy a delicious cup of matcha tea in a precious antique Karatsu ware bowl, which left me deeply moved.

We talked about a lot of things.

Thoughts on old Karatsu ware, the Japanese trading post in Busan, Hideyoshi's campaign against the Japanese during the Bunroku-Keicho War starting from Nagoya Bay below the workshop, and how to prepare squid in Yobuko (lol)...

After a lively conversation, we were invited to the pottery wheel area, where we were able to see the pieces that were about to enter the kiln.

I was told that the kiln firing would begin the night I visited, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished products.

In the workshop, a cute black cat was basking in the sun, and seeing the kind-hearted Mr. Yano playing with the cat warmed my heart as well.

Now, in this exhibition, our fourth at our gallery in two years, we will be presenting our latest works, including tea ceremony ceramics and other tableware.

Yano, who is popular among pottery enthusiasts for his simple works and unpretentious personality, is also scheduled to be present at the gallery.

We would be grateful if you could offer your frank and honest guidance to the potters of Karatsu.
