| Introduction Introduction |
Jeff Shapiro is a ceramic artist who continues to create his work in the suburbs of New York City, USA. He came to Japan nearly 50 years ago and learned a great deal about Japanese pottery from Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure of Bizen ware. Time passed, and in 1998, Kouichirou Isezaki , the son of Jun Isezaki, crossed the ocean with great ambition and knocked on Jeff's door to become his apprentice. As I write this humble piece, our gallery is currently holding a Koichiro exhibition, and I feel a strange sense of destiny about this...
Now, in this exhibition, our gallery's first in nine years, we will be presenting approximately 100 new works, including tea bowls, flower vases, sake vessels, and chopstick rests. I received many pieces of artwork for use in the invitation, but the one I chose from among them was the one pictured above. I apologize for the height of the pieces on display during the summer, but these bowls, made from American clay and fired in a wood-fired kiln, were truly fine pieces with plenty to admire. His demeanor is unique and reflects a different sensibility than that of the Japanese, and his approach to medicine is also exquisite. The spot I chose for the front of the piece beautifully showcases the three colors, like a tricolor, and I really liked the bold carving on the base, which is his signature style.
Jeff and his wife recently visited Japan for the first time in several years, and it was wonderful to see the loving couple again. As a Japanese person, I deeply admire his love for Japanese tea ceremony culture and his proactive efforts to promote it, such as organizing a symposium on tea ceramics in the United States. Unfortunately, Jeff will not be present at this exhibition, and we apologize for the hot August weather, but we hope you will still enjoy viewing the works.
