ジェフ・シャピロさんは、米国ニューヨークの郊外で制作を続ける陶芸家です。 今から50年近く前に来日され、備前焼の人間国宝 伊勢﨑淳氏からも日本の焼き物について多くを学ばれました。 時は流れ、平成10年には、伊勢﨑淳氏のご子息、伊勢﨑晃一朗さんが、大志を抱いて海を渡り、ジェフさんの門を叩き弟子入りされます。 この拙稿を書いている時、まさに弊廊では晃一朗展を開催中であり、不思議なご縁を感じております・・・。
さて、弊廊で9年振りとなる本展では、最新作の茶盌、花入・酒器や箸置など約100点を発表致します。 ご案内状用にと沢山の作品をお送り頂いたのですが、その中から私が選んだのは↑の一盌でした。 夏の時期の展覧会としては、背が高めで恐縮ですが、米国の土で成形され、薪窯で焼成された本盌は、見所満載の良盌でした。 その佇まいも日本人とは違った感性で個性的であり、薬の調子も絶妙。 正面にと選んだ場所はまさにトリコロールの様な三色の発色が美しく、その高台は、彼の真骨頂たる大胆な削りで、気に入りました。
先日、数年振りにジェフご夫妻が来日され、仲睦まじいお二人に久々に出会えました。 彼は、日本の茶の湯文化を愛し、米国で茶陶のシンポジウムを開くなど、茶の湯文化の普及に努めるその前向きな姿勢に、日本人として頭が下がります。 本展は残念ながらジェフさんの在廊はありませんし、暑い葉月の展観で恐縮ですが、どうぞご清覧を頂ければ幸いです。

| Biography Biography | 昭和24年 アメリカ・ニューヨーク州に生まれる 昭和47年 日本で9年間、陶芸を学ぶ。その間、兵庫県浜坂で穴窯を作り作陶 備前を訪ねては伊勢﨑淳先生に教えを受ける 昭和57年 アメリカに帰国。以来ニューヨーク州アコードで作陶 平成18年 マサチューセッツ州、コンコードにて伊勢﨑一門展（ラコスト ギャラリー） 平成22年 マサチューセッツ州、ボストンにて茶陶のシンポジウム開催（ボストン美術館） 平成23年 弊廊にて個展（平成26年） 以降、世界各地で展覧会を開催 |
