| Introduction Introduction |
On a cold day in December, I traveled to Tsu in Mie Prefecture for the first time in a while to meet with Mr. Shuji Fujimura. When it comes to tea ceramics from Mie Prefecture, many people probably think of Kawakita Handeishi, a renowned modern tea connoisseur. Mr. Fujimura is a grand-disciple of Han-dei, and is a potter whose mature skills shine brightly as he approaches his 60th birthday in a few years.
His works mainly consist of beautifully painted red porcelain, underglaze blue porcelain, Mino ware, and Karatsu ware, and in particular, his collection of pieces with flowing, free-flowing paintings continues to captivate the hearts of many pottery enthusiasts. The subjects depicted are diverse, ranging from flowers and birds to the natural world, and the paintings are both powerful and ephemeral. I am always captivated by the artist's confident brushwork.
In recent years, thanks to a precious connection with NIGO®, who has become the artistic director of KENZO, a new collection featuring designs from Fujimura's work was presented at last year's Paris Fashion Week, which made me incredibly happy and thrilled. Han-deishi must be beaming with pride at the success of his grand-disciple.
This exhibition will feature approximately 100 works, including the latest tea ceremony ceramics and tableware. In this season of Keichitsu (the awakening of insects), when we can feel the warmth of spring, Mr. Fujimura and I look forward to your visit to our gallery.
