A 20-minute drive west from Tsu Station in Mie Prefecture will take you to the kiln site of Han-deishi Hironaga Kiln, nestled in a scenic mountainous area. Hironaga Kiln was founded by Kawakita Handeishi, a connoisseur of tea ceremony and often described as "the Koetsu of the Showa era."
I recently reunited with Shuuji Fujimura at the Hironaga Kiln. I had the opportunity to see many of Han-deishi's humorous and powerful calligraphic works, as well as the Mudbutsu-do (mud Buddha hall) and the tea room "Yamazato" that he built. Stepping inside the tea room, I felt as if I could hear the joyful laughter of yesteryear.
Han-deishi, who also served as the president of Hyakugo Bank, approached tea bowls with a free spirit. Fujimura-san has been studying under Tsuboshima Tsuchihei-sensei, a beloved disciple of Han-deishi, for 28 years. This exhibition, the first at our gallery in two years, will feature 90 new works, primarily focusing on tea ceremony ceramics. The works, including the renowned red-painted and underglaze blue porcelain pieces, are sure to delight the eyes of pottery enthusiasts.
Currently, thanks to the efforts of Chitose Co., Ltd., a company of the Kawakita family, the Hironaga Kiln site is being beautifully maintained and preserved, with further restoration work and new facilities under construction. The sound of hammers is constant at the kiln site. Furthermore, the company has opened a stylish gallery in Tsu city, where works by artists such as Han-deishi are beautifully displayed.
Immediately before this exhibition, we will also be holding a four-person exhibition featuring works by the same Han-deishi Hironaga Kiln (October 24-30). We would be delighted if you could also visit that exhibition.

| Biography Biography | Born in Ueno, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1965. Graduated from Seinan Gakuin University in 1989. Hironaga Kiln: Studied under Tsuboshima Tsuchihira In 2013, he became the head of the kiln at Hironaga Kiln. Solo exhibitions held at Shinjuku Isetan, Osaka Takashimaya, JR Nagoya Takashimaya, Kakiden Gallery, and other locations. |
