A short hour's drive southeast from Hakata Station, along the highway, will take you to the Takatori pottery region. Takatori ware, located in the Koishiwara district of Fukuoka Prefecture, is a scenic ancient kiln with a history spanning over 400 years. During the Edo period, it flourished as the official kiln of the Kuroda clan, and Lord Kobori Enshu commissioned it to produce tea ceremony pottery to his liking, so it came to be counted as the foremost of the seven kilns of Enshu. This time, we'd like to introduce Shunkei Takatori , the heir to the Takatori family, who run the only direct-line kiln among Takatori ware potters and have carried on the tradition for thirteen generations. Shunkei is a young ceramic artist who turned 37 this year and is increasingly promising for the future. Two years ago, I was filled with gratitude when you chose our humble gallery as the venue for your first solo exhibition. His works are characterized by their beautiful glaze and thinly drawn bodies, and their elegant appearance has been well-received by tea ceremony enthusiasts. The main visual features a water container with a beautiful sky-blue design and a modern form, while the tea caddy placed in front of it catches the eye with its beautiful amber color and elegant shoulder-shaped form, characteristic of Takatori tea ceremony tradition. While preserving the traditional style of Takatori ware, Shunkei is also venturing into a modern style that is relevant to the Reiwa era. She diligently practices the Enshu-ryu style of tea ceremony and is very knowledgeable about the practical aspects of the tea ceremony. This exhibition will showcase over 200 of my latest works, ranging from tea ceremony ceramics to everyday tableware. | Biography Biography | Born in 1989 as the eldest son of the 13th generation Hachiyama. Graduated from Kyushu College of Art and Design in 2010. Subsequently spent three years working as a potter at the head family of Takatori-yaki pottery. In 2015, I underwent four years of apprenticeship under the head of the Enshu school of tea ceremony, Kobori Sōjitsu. In 2018, after returning to the kiln, he devoted himself to pottery making under the guidance of the 13th generation master. 2022 Fukuoka Design Award Gold Prize Winner: "Komagasane" First solo exhibition at Kakiden Gallery in 2024. 2025: 5th Traditional Craft Revival Contest, Craft Leader Award |
