When I saw Yasunaga Raizan's "Painted Karatsu Tea Bowl," I suddenly remembered the anecdote about Rikyu's morning glory tea ceremony. When Hideyoshi, who had requested a tea ceremony to admire morning glories, arrived at Rikyu's residence, he found that all the morning glory flowers that were supposed to be in the garden had been picked, and only one of the most beautiful morning glories had been placed in the tea room. This anecdote illustrates Rikyu's aesthetics, but the circle depicted on this tea bowl appears almost a semicircle, with the brushstrokes seemingly stopping midway. That's why there's so much force in the handwriting. The same can be said for tea bowls with flared edges. The beauty of Karatsu ware lies in its free and generous forms, but by not over-painting or over-constructing, it paradoxically condenses its power. This tea bowl is not a copy of an old Karatsu ware bowl, but rather a tea bowl that expresses the essence of old Karatsu ware. You can sense Yasunaga's aesthetics there. Yasunaga Raizan is undoubtedly an artist who will carry the future of Karatsu ware, a type of tea ceremony pottery.

| Biography Biography | Born in 1970 in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture. 2001: Studied under Sajiro Tanaka. 2003: Studied under Mr. Tohei Fujinoki In 2008, a climbing kiln was built at the current location. In 2013, the name was changed to "Raiyama," a name given by Mr. Sajiro Tanaka. In 2016, a tea ceremony ceramics exhibition was held at the Kyoto Nomura Museum of Art, and the work was selected for the 63rd Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. 2017: Selected for the 34th Tabe Museum of Art Grand Prize "Exhibition of Art in the Tea Ceremony," and selected for the 7th Kikuchi Biennale. 2019: Selected for the 25th Japan Ceramics Exhibition, Honorable Mention at the Contemporary Ceramics Hagi Grand Prize Exhibition V, Selected for the 8th Kikuchi Biennale. 2021: Exhibited at the "Modern Crafts and Tea Ceremony Vessels" exhibition (National Crafts Museum/Kanazawa) |
