Introduction
Introduction

Are you familiar with the "sandstone theory" regarding Old Karatsu ware?

In particular, early Karatsu ware was made not from clay, but from crushed sandstone, which was used as the raw material for the body.

Among ceramic artists who have long been drawn to the allure of Old Karatsu ware and have pursued its creation alongside their personal artistic endeavors, there is a growing movement to re-examine theories surrounding Old Karatsu ware, reconsider their own research on the subject, and incorporate the findings into their artwork.

Raizan Yasunaga (born 1970), who has been selected for open-call exhibitions such as the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and the Kikuchi Biennale with his tea bowls, is one such artist.

While achieving results with my work using clay, I had always been curious about creating works using sandstone as a raw material, something I felt I needed to try at least once to move forward.

And recently, he has been using solo exhibitions to showcase a part of his creative process.

A characteristic of tea bowls made from sandstone is that there is little variation in the texture of the clay or the glaze, resulting in a quiet, gentle, and understated appearance.

The elements that were previously considered highlights have been stripped away, giving the impression of being rather subdued at first glance.

Compared to regular clay, it has more viscosity and resilience, is easier to throw on a potter's wheel, and fires at lower temperatures and for shorter periods.

From another perspective, this means that a new construction process, different from the knowledge acquired so far, requires new skills to make the most of new materials.

Yasunaga's work, which utilizes everything from clay to sandstone depending on what he wants to create, showcases the broader and deeper scope of his pottery making, and viewers are likely to make new discoveries as well.

This solo exhibition, marking a transitional period, is definitely not something you should miss.
