Even within the category of Hagi ware, there are two main types depending on the location of the kiln. One such area is Hagi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where you'll find kilns such as Sakakoraizaemon Kiln, Miwa Kiln, and Okada Kiln. Another area is Nagato City, about a 30-minute drive west of Hagi City, where you'll find Takao Tahara 's Toubei House, Sakakura Shinbei House, and Sadatsugu Shinjou House, which we'll be introducing today. The Tahara family lives across from the Shinjo family, and the Shinjo family lives next door to the Sakakura family. The people of Nagato are close neighbors, like family, and each pottery family lives together harmoniously, helping each other out. Near Toubei Kiln, there is a river with the lovely name of Otozure River, which is famous for its fireflies, and Nagato Yumoto Onsen, a hot spring resort with a wonderfully smooth water that I also love.
This exhibition, the first at our gallery in two years, will feature 70 new works, including tea ceremony ceramics and other tableware. The "Hagi tea bowl" shown above has a beautiful, ever-changing pattern on its exterior, and combined with its elegant shape, the green of the matcha tea would surely stand out. Takao creates traditional tea ceremony utensils and vessels based on his experience in Urasenke-ryu tea ceremony training, while also creating innovative tea ceremony utensils and vessels with a playful spirit, using tools and trains as motifs. I myself use his mug, which has a handle shaped like a grinder, for everyday use. Even something as simple as drinking a glass of water can be brightened up by this little touch of playfulness.
Although it is still a cold season with spring just around the corner, we would be delighted if you would take a look at our work and offer your frank guidance to our young potters.

| Biography Biography | Born in 1982 in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. 2005 Tokyo University of the Arts Graduation Exhibition, Sugawara Prize 2007: Completed graduate studies in sculpture at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, University of Tokyo. 2010: Trained in Mino (under the tutelage of Master Seiya Toyoba) In 2011, he began studying pottery under his father, the 13th generation Tobei. 2016: Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (and selected seven more times since), and received an Excellence Award at the Yamaguchi Prefecture Art Exhibition. 2017 Hagi-denryu - Exhibition of Six Young Artists - (Kakiden Gallery) 2019 Yamaguchi Traditional Crafts Exhibition: Japan Crafts Association Yamaguchi Branch Chief's Award 2020 Japan Ceramic Society Contemporary Ceramics Encouragement Award, Chugoku-Shikoku Exhibition "Appreciation" Category, Encouragement Award Eiffel Tower Tea Party 2024 [Paris, France] Currently a full member of the Japan Crafts Association. |
