| Introduction Introduction |
The Japan Ceramic Society's Contemporary Ceramics Encouragement Award is an open call exhibition held annually, with the target region changing each year, in order to discover and encourage local artisans. Following Hokkaido, Hokuriku, and Kinki, in 2020, the award targeted the Chugoku and Shikoku regions and accepted entries in three categories: "Appreciation," "Tea Ceremony Ceramics," and "Everyday Tableware." This solo exhibition commemorates the award.
Takao Tahara 's work, which utilizes the traditional straw-white glaze of Hagi ware, was highly praised for its quiet yet ever-changing glaze flow and the stable form that allows it to be showcased.
Vertical lines resembling grain patterns run through the surface, and thin blue streaks appear in places along the rim and in the thickness of the glaze.
Since receiving the Encouragement Award, Takao Tahara has become even more meticulous about the way his flowing white glaze develops. While he also creates works with striking forms, he says that the shapes of his flowing white glaze pieces are restrained in order to allow the glaze to be appreciated. A key characteristic of his technique is that the pieces are fired twice. If the firing conditions are even slightly off, the appearance becomes monotonous from top to bottom. After the first firing, the pieces are almost expressionless, but after applying the glaze again and firing a second time, the expression begins to emerge. Perhaps the sense of weightiness comes from the vertical lines creating layers with depth.
This exhibition features works that explore new expressions of Hagi ware, primarily focusing on pieces with this flowing white glaze. Please come and see them.
