| Introduction Introduction |
Hagi ware is a type of glazed pottery created in the early 17th century during the late Momoyama period, when wabi-cha (a style of tea ceremony emphasizing simplicity and humility) was at its peak. It was produced by the Mori family (the official kiln of the Hagi domain) using Korean potters who were brought in from abroad. It is particularly highly regarded for its style and taste reminiscent of Korean tea bowls and is considered a top-class type of Japanese pottery.
Yuu Okada (born 1946) is a leading Hagi ware artist who embodies a tradition of over 400 years. With the skilled techniques that earned him the designation of "Hagi ware," an intangible cultural property of Yamaguchi Prefecture, in 2006, he has continuously created tea ceremony utensils that embody traditional beauty, demonstrating the true essence of "Tea Ceramics Hagi." On the other hand, in recent years he has expanded his style to include works such as "White Glaze," which features simple forms, and "Flame Glaze," which expresses serene inner landscapes.
I want to fully appreciate the current state of "Okada Hagi," which pursues rich artistry with a fresh sense of form while making use of traditional clay and glaze.
