| Introduction Introduction |
Project Iki is a group of young artists formed 12 years ago. Under the theme of "What is sophistication?", 15 individuals, including ceramic artists, kettle makers, calligraphers, photographers, Kamakura carving artisans, glass artists, Japanese painters, and confectioners, are earnestly continuing to share new ideas about tea ceremony utensils.
Now, as autumn deepens and the time of Kanro (Cold Dew) arrives, this exhibition is subtitled "Tsukahi" (meaning "use") and explores the beauty of craftsmanship in everyday "use." A wide variety of works, primarily tea ceremony utensils, will be on display, and related events such as tea ceremonies and receptions will also be held. The artist will be present at the gallery every day during the exhibition, so we would be grateful if you could offer your frank advice on the concept of "iki" (sophistication/elegance).

| Biography Biography | ▶ Norikatsu Satou Sato Norikatsu [Ceramic artist] Born in 1974 in Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture. 2001: Completed Master's Program in Ceramics, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. In 2006 and 2019, she was an assistant at the Ceramics Research Laboratory, Tokyo University of the Arts. Her scientific research project was titled "Restorative Firing Research of Large Celadon Plates." Participated in "13th and 14th Century Longquan Kiln Ceramic Techniques," including the Longquan kilns of the Southern Song dynasty in Zhejiang Province, China. He visited kiln sites for research and investigation, and worked as an assistant in the production of carved large plates in Longquan. In 2019, I was appointed as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Crafts at Tama Art University. 2022: Received the Encouragement Award at the 42nd Pola Awards for Traditional Culture. Currently, I am a full member of the Japan Crafts Association, a secretary of the Ceramics Department, and a standing director of the Japan Ceramic Art Association. ▶ Arata Nagano Nagano Arata [Tea ceremony kettle and cast iron artist] Born in 1972 as the eldest son of the Nagano family. 1993: Graduated from Takaoka National Junior College, majoring in Metalwork. In 2003, he was selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition for the first time. Since then, he has been continuously selected for the Traditional Crafts East Japan Branch Exhibition and the Traditional Crafts Japan Metalwork Exhibition. 2009: Newcomer Award at the Japan Traditional Metalwork Exhibition 2011: Traditional Crafts East Japan Branch Exhibition, East Japan Branch Chief's Award 2015 Traditional Crafts East Japan Branch Exhibition MOA Museum of Art Award ▶ Ken'yuu Mitsuhashi Mitsuhashi Kenyu [Traditional inheritor of Kamakura carving] Born in Kamakura in 1980. Studied under his father, Kamei Mihashi. In 2010, I received the name "Kamayu" from Abbot Masamichi Yoshida of Kencho-ji Temple. 2015: Production of incense burner stand for the four-headed tea ceremony at Kencho-ji Temple (2018: Production of front table) 2017: Exhibited at the Tobi Art Fair 2017 (Tokyo Art Club) 2018: Supervised the "Zen, Tea Ceremony, and Kamakura Carving Exhibition" hosted by Kencho-ji Temple. 2019: Creation of a large incense box for Engaku-ji Temple (commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Shaku Sōen and the 200th anniversary of the death of Daiyō Kokushi) A Kamakura-bori Goryeo-style table was dedicated to Tokei-ji Temple (in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of Shaku Sōen). In 2022, a replica of a Kamakura-bori incense box, believed to be that of Yoritomo, was donated to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (Kamakura). ▶ Dae-yong Kim Kim Daeyong [Ceramic artist] Born in South Korea in 1976. Graduated from Chung-Ang University, South Korea, Department of Crafts, Ceramics Major in 2000. 2002: Completed graduate studies in ceramics at Chung-Ang University, South Korea. Arrived in Japan in 2003 In 2005, I enrolled as a research student at Tokyo University of the Arts. Completed doctoral program in Ceramics, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2011. In 2012, I returned to Korea and joined Gwangju Kiln as a designer. 2017: Associate Professor, Department of Ceramics, Seoul National University of Science and Technology ▶ Takashi Tanaka TanakaTakashi [Ceramic artist] 1997: Completed graduate studies in Ceramics at the Department of Crafts, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Selected for the Kobe Biennale Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition in 2015. 2017: 10th Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition - Excellence Award, 3rd Kanazawa World Craft Triennale - Selected for the competition. 2019: Form Limit Exhibition (Paris, France) 2019 Hana to Uchuu Takashi Tanaka Exhibition, Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store 2019: Work acquired by THE OKURA TOKYO (Tokyo) 2019 "Bullet Forest - Young Artist County Exhibition Series Second Season Cold Snow Forest" (Beijing) ▶ Satoshi Nemoto Nemoto Satoshi [Calligrapher] 2013: Completed doctoral program at Daito Bunka University Graduate School, obtaining a PhD in Calligraphy Studies. 2013: Became an associate member of the Mainichi Calligraphy Association (left the association in 2016 and has been unaffiliated since). 2017: Calligraphy for the renewal image of the watch brand Grand Seiko. 2019 First solo exhibition in NY “flow” Setsugekka East Village Currently, I teach at the Department of Calligraphy, Faculty of Letters, Daito Bunka University; the Humanities and Culture Course, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Open University of Japan; and at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Culture Center. ▶ Sachie Hamaya Hamaya Sachie [Photographer] Born in Tokyo In 2001, he transitioned from the world of sailing to become a photographer. With a focus on "finding and capturing things as they are," and deliberately removing unnecessary creative elements, this photographer values the documentary quality that photography conveys through advertising, official photography for national teams, CD jackets, live performances, and artist photography. His great-uncle was Hiroshi Hamaya, a photographer who donated to Magnum. |
