| Introduction Introduction |
While tea ceremony ceramics are often associated with earthenware, Peter Hamann has actively worked on porcelain tea ceremony utensils. Using Izushi-type Kakutani stone mixed with about 20% Amakusa pottery stone, the temperature is slowly raised to 1220 degrees. Thinly made tea bowls and flower vases, shaped on a potter's wheel, are adorned with nuanced, abstract carved patterns, and the variations in glaze thickness caused by the carvings create subtle shadows and highlights. In a pristine white vessel, the green of the tea appears all the more beautiful. On the other hand, with earthenware tea bowls, they use glaze made from the husks (parts other than the beans and roots) of black soybeans obtained from local farmers, enjoying the texture of the "kairagi" (plum blossom-like) glaze. They have naturally been practicing SDG-oriented pottery making. The refined elegance honed in porcelain and the playful spirit of earthenware tea bowls create a gentle synergistic effect. It could also be a rich fusion of Japanese and American temperaments.
