| Introduction Introduction |
When you think of Masahiko Andou , you think of his small mukozuke (small serving dishes), and when you think of his small mukozuke, you think of Masahiko Andou —these small dishes have become the artist's signature. In the approximately 12 years since he began creating them, the number of designs has grown to 589. After reading that far, doesn't a question arise? If he were simply creating them according to his own ideas, it wouldn't take 12 years to create around 600 different designs. All of these small mukozuke are the result of an exploration and recreation process, in which the original Momoyama period pieces that served as the basis can be clearly identified. Just as traditional performing arts such as Noh find a freedom that an individual alone could not reach after completely assimilating the "form," Andou has immersed himself in the Momoyama form. With a calm eye like an archaeologist gazing at a kiln site and a spirit of immersion as if possessed by a 400-year-old potter, Andou's solitary sprint is accelerating ever faster. | Biography Biography | ▶︎ Masahiko Andou Ando Masahiko Born in 1973 in Nagoya to a family of antique dealers. 2002: Began learning pottery on my own. In 2004, the workshop was moved to Jinya, Seto City. In 2007, the workshop was moved to Hatsuhara-cho, Tajimi City. 2009: Built a wood-fired oven. Solo exhibition in Shanghai in 2019 ▶︎ Yuki Andou Ando Yuki Born in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture Graduated from Aichi Prefectural Seto Ceramics High School, Ceramics Department in 1997. Built a kiln in Nagoya City in 2002. In 2007, she moved to Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, where she encountered Annam ware. She married Masahiko Andou |
