Introduction
Introduction

You Akiyama and Junko Kitamura are a married couple of ceramic artists who have a studio in Kyoto.

Akiyama's works, which involve a single-minded engagement with clay, have captivated pottery lovers around the world with their powerful objects of all sizes, while Kitamura's works have gained popularity for their delicate craftsmanship, achieved through incredibly intricate inlay techniques.

Now, for this joint exhibition by the husband and wife team, the first at our gallery in ten years, Mr. Akiyama will be tackling functional tableware, presenting over 20 pieces including tea bowls, flower vases, and hanging flower vases. Mr. Kitamura will be presenting 20 of his latest works, including tableware, bowls, and lidded containers.

When the couple visited our gallery in January of this year, I saw photographs of tea bowls and flower vases that were still in progress, and they were truly captivating pieces that deeply moved me. I am very much looking forward to seeing how they turn out.

Some time ago, I visited the workshop of two wonderful people in Kyoto City for a meeting about this exhibition.

While enjoying the fragrant coffee that was brewed for us, we celebrated our reunion and had a lively discussion about pottery.

Their unpretentious and warm personalities make them a couple I truly admire.

I apologize for the rainy season, but I would be grateful if you could take a look.
