What comes to mind when you think of Ibaraki Prefecture? Mito Komon, natto (fermented soybeans), Kairakuen Garden, Mount Tsukuba, nemophila flowers... When I think of Ibaraki Prefecture (and I also love natto), I think of Kasama Art Forest Park. This lush green park is home to the Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of Ceramic Art, Kasama Craft Hill, and the Ibaraki Prefectural Kasama Ceramic Art University, where Kenji Gomi whom we will introduce today, teaches.
Mr. Gomi is a potter who is diligently working on his pottery in Kasama. Many of you may recognize him as the last grand prize winner of the "Japan Ceramics Exhibition," which sadly came to an end.
During my previous solo exhibition at our gallery, I described the appeal of Gomi's work as its "undulating forms" and "textured surface," but this time I would like to add "a gentle and serene presence" to that. The artwork shown above, which arrived with the invitation to this exhibition, was a strangely captivating piece that brought a sense of peace to my heart as I gazed upon it.
Now, for this exhibition, our gallery's third, we will be presenting approximately 50 works, ranging from our latest tea bowls and water pitchers to sculptures. Mr. Gomi is loved by everyone because of his honest and upright personality. A leisurely afternoon in Kasuga makes me want to head to Kasama just to see his smile... I would be delighted if you would take a look.

| Biography Biography | Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1978. Graduated from Waseda University, Faculty of Human Sciences in 2001. 2011: Encouragement Award at the 4th Kikuchi Biennale, Runner-up Grand Prize and Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition Award at the 21st Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. 2013: 5th Kikuchi Biennale, Excellence Award 2014: 7th Contemporary Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition TOKI Oribe Grand Prize, 10th International Ceramics Exhibition Mino Ceramics Division Grand Prix Production began in 2015 in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture. 2019: Grand Prize and Prince Katsura Cup at the 25th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition 2020: The 31st Takashimaya Cultural Foundation Takashimaya Art Award Currently, he is a specially appointed professor at Ibaraki Prefectural Kasama Ceramic Art University and a Jomon Hometown Ambassador for Chino City. |
