| Introduction Introduction |
Kamiya built his kiln in Higashiterayama, Chiba City, the year after graduating from Tama Art University in 1963, meaning he has already been involved in pottery making for 50 years. In recent years, he has served as the secretary-general of the Eastern Japan branch of the Japan Crafts Association, taking care of traditional crafts and enjoying great popularity. While interacting with many senior ceramic artists, the person who had the strongest influence on him was the late Koichi Tamura, a former professor at Tokyo University of the Arts and a Living National Treasure. Tamura excelled at depicting subjects using iron oxide, and Kamiya followed in his footsteps, producing many works depicting plants and fruits using iron oxide and red lining on silk, thus establishing his own distinctive style that is instantly recognizable. However, perhaps because of this, his style seemed to have become somewhat formulaic, so, being on friendly terms with him, I suggested that he try to express the emotions of his subjects more naturally. As a result, it seems that we can expect to see beautiful paintings filled with heartfelt emotion at this upcoming solo exhibition. Haruzo Hayashiya |
