Yukio Shakunaga 's workshop in Toyama Prefecture is located in a wonderfully pleasant spot, backed by the Tateyama mountain range and surrounded by lush green fields and forests below. Inside the workshop, a golden retriever happily runs around, and combined with the warm personalities of the family, it's a workshop that makes you feel truly good.
"Etchu Seto ware," which originated in the Momoyama period, unfortunately died out during the Taisho era, but it was revived by Yukio's grandfather. Etchu Seto ware is characterized by its warm and gentle texture, made using high-quality local white clay that is mined by the family themselves.
Now, for our second solo exhibition, we will be showcasing 80 new works, including vases, water containers, tea bowls, large plates, and sake cups, primarily using techniques such as ridged and faceted glazes, in shades of blue, black, and white.
Recently, he established a local group called "Kanakure-kai" for Etchu Seto ware, and has been actively holding exhibitions and tea ceremonies, creating a vibrant atmosphere. He also had a connection with the late Steve Jobs of Apple Inc., who was very fond of Yukio's work and purchased many pieces. As an iPhone user and big fan of Apple products myself, I am looking forward to Yukio's new works. Please do take a look.
