One February morning, when snow was falling in Tokyo, I boarded a bullet train heading north to Ichinoseki in Iwate Prefecture, where Mr. Sugawara's workshop is located. Having lived in Sendai myself, I felt a sense of excitement about this northward journey.
I visited Sugawara Workshop in Ichinoseki City and saw some of their recent works. They use various types of wood, including Akita cedar, Jindai cedar, and elm, all of which are harvested locally. I was delighted to see the meticulous and wonderful craftsmanship in each and every piece.
Sashimono refers to woodworking techniques that combine pieces of wood without using nails. In this first solo exhibition, titled "Sashimono in Everyday Life," we will be showcasing a variety of sashimono works, including tea ceremony-related items such as folding screens, trays, incense boxes, hearth frames, tea boxes, and tiered stands, as well as everyday items such as cosmetic boxes, trays, plates, chopsticks, and chopstick rests.
Despite his large physique, Shinichi has a kind personality. He will be at the venue every day during the exhibition, so we would be grateful for any feedback you may have.
