Sohei Takashima, a Bizen ware potter, hails from Kushiro City, Hokkaido. He studied under Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure, and is a promising ceramic artist who is expected to carry the future of Bizen ware. The tea bowls on display in this exhibition include two types: the angular "Hidasuki Chawan" and the semi-cylindrical "Yohen Chawan" with a rounded base. Both bowls are reminiscent of Koetsu's tea bowls. The former is a wheel-thrown tea bowl that pursues the texture of the clay and the beauty of the red streaks that are characteristic of Bizen ware, while the latter is a hand-formed tea bowl that pursues a powerful expression through kiln transformation. The clay used for the bowls comes in two forms: one made from fine-grained paddy field soil, and the other from a mixture of coarse, roughly textured mountain soil. The bowls made from mountain soil tend to be slightly thicker. The "Hidasuki Tea Bowl" featured in the direct mail advertisement has spatula marks on its surface, and the tea reservoir inside is also meticulously crafted. I'll never forget what Professor Seizo Hayashiya said to me when we went to Sapporo: "Unglazed stoneware would really suit Hokkaido." Knowing that Takashima hails from Hokkaido, admired Koetsu's tea bowls, and is seriously pursuing the art of unglazed stoneware, one can only imagine how much anticipation one would have for him.

| Biography Biography | Born in Kushiro City, Hokkaido in 1991. Graduated from the Department of Design, Dohto University (now Seisa Dohto University) in 2014. Studied under Jun Isezaki. 2016: Selected for the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition (2018, 2019), Encouragement Award (2017) 2017: Selected for the 34th Tanabe Museum of Art "Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition" (2020, 2021, and 2022). 2018: 5th Toubi Exhibition - Encouragement Award, Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition - Selected for the Chugoku Branch Exhibition. 2019: Selected for the 12th Contemporary Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition (2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2024); Honorable Mention V at the Hagi Grand Prize Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramics. 2020 Japan Ceramic Society Contemporary Ceramics Encouragement Award, Chugoku-Shikoku Exhibition Encouragement Award 2022 Japan Ceramic Society Contemporary Ceramics Encouragement Award, Chugoku-Shikoku Exhibition Commemorative Solo Exhibition (Kakiden Gallery) Currently being produced in Nagahama, Ushimado-cho, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture. |
