About five years ago, he came to visit me and asked me to become his master in making tea bowls. His name is Tenzan Choushun (Chōshun Tenzan), which is, of course, not his real name but a name he calls himself. The kiln and residence are located in the suburbs of Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. I visited once and found the wife and the entire family to be cheerful and friendly people, so I have continued to maintain a friendship with them. He was born into a wealthy family in Kokura, Kitakyushu City, but for reasons he decided to pursue pottery at the age of 19, and is now a unique ceramic artist who is 63 years old. Sozan is the pen name of the eldest daughter, who handcrafts small, slightly quirky incense boxes and dolls. I'm both excited and worried to see what kind of works they'll present. | Biography Biography | □ Tenzan Choushun (Tenzan) Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1949. In 1989, the program "A Fire Burns in the Kiln" was broadcast on NHK. 1991 (Heisei 3): The Akagiha Tenmoku tea bowl "Autumn Wind" is completed. 1993 (Heisei 5): The Kiln-fired Goryeo tea bowl is completed. In 1995, NHK News' "Ohayo Nippon" aired a segment titled "Challenging the Restoration of a Legendary Pottery." 1998: Tenzan Choushun 30th Anniversary of Pottery: 70 Selected Masterpieces Exhibition (Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art) Tenzan Choushun (Taizan, Futaba) Masterpiece Exhibition (Ehime Prefectural Museum of Art) Since 1989, they have been holding parent-child exhibitions at department stores throughout Japan. □ Souzan Choushun (Souzan) Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1974. At the age of 8, he began his apprenticeship, receiving instruction in pottery making from his father. In 1990, after graduating from junior high school, she made her debut as a ceramic artist at the "Toyama Daimaru Department Store Art Salon." In 1993 (Heisei 5), NHK broadcast "A Stove Burns in a Snow-Covered Village." In 1998, a feature article about her as a handmade incense box artist was published in the monthly magazine "Bijutsu" (Art). |
