| Introduction Introduction |
Keiji Itou is 90 years old this year. While there are ceramic artists who are still active at the age of 90, there are few who are highly regarded both domestically and internationally and continue to be active. From June 28th to September 28th of this year, the " Keiji Itou Prayer for the Future" exhibition was held at the Gifu Prefectural Museum of Modern Ceramics.
This exhibition showcases Ito's career to date, the perspective that permeates his wide range of diverse artistic forms, and his current creative position. Some of you may already know about that exhibition, as it was featured on NHK's Sunday Art Museum program.
This exhibition is a tea ceremony utensil exhibition held to commemorate Ito's 90th birthday. Over 30 tea bowls, as well as bowls, side dishes, and other kaiseki tableware will be on display.
For example, the bowl pictured above, which adorns the main visual of this exhibition, is a pentagonal tea bowl decorated with a pattern in cobalt blue, but no matter how you look at it, it is unmistakably an Ito tea bowl. And yet, it somehow evokes the feel of Oribe ware. A tea bowl with a rim that looks difficult to use for preparing tea might actually be surprisingly easy to drink from once you start using it. For Ito, the enclosure represents a barrier, and the inside of the tea bowl represents a sacred realm. This is a common thread in Ito's other sculptural works and is connected to his awareness of enclosed spaces, boundaries, and enclosed areas.
