On a hot July day, I visited Ichirou Katou studio in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Located on a mountainside, the studio offers a scenic view of the Suo Sea below, with the Kunisaki Peninsula of Kyushu visible in the distance. It is in this beautiful location that Mr. Katou continues his pottery work. Kato's work primarily features a style of applying colored paint to a fabric-like surface. While his previous works tended to be quiet and straightforward in form, I was pleased to see that his recent works, which I saw at his studio the other day, had evolved into powerful and bold forms, even though they still used the same fabric-like surface. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that Mr. Kato himself was tanned and looked more muscular, which made me nod in agreement. | Biography Biography | Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1972. Graduated from Kyoto Junior College of Art in 1992 (Heisei 4). Completed training at the Ibaraki Prefectural Ceramics Training Center in 1995, and studied under Motohiko Itou 1999: Received the Governor's Award at the Ceramics Foundation Exhibition. 2002: Received the Excellence Award at the Ibaraki Prefecture Art Festival Art Exhibition. Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition; subsequently selected 8 times. 2004: Received the Mitsukoshi Award at the Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition, and the Encouragement Award at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition. 2006: Received the Japan Crafts Association Award at the New Ceramics Exhibition. 2007: Received the Hokkaido Governor's Award at the Otaki Hokkaido Ceramics Exhibition. 2008: Received the Grand Prize and the Hokkaido Governor's Award at the Otaki Hokkaido Ceramics Exhibition. 2009 Exhibited at the 9th 21st Century Exhibition of the Five Cities Art Dealers Federation |
