For me, Yokohama is a place I've always longed to visit. Perhaps because of the port, the town has an exotic atmosphere, and the streets are beautiful, giving you the illusion of being abroad. 今回ご紹介する若林和恵さんは、そんな横浜に工房を構える気鋭の女流陶芸家です。 On a sweltering hot afternoon in July, I headed to Wakabayashi Workshop. It's a very lovely house, and the workshop itself seems like a very practical space. At their home, depending on the wind direction, they can hear the sound of ship horns from ships anchored in Yokohama Port.
Now, getting back to the main topic, Ms. Wakabayashi has recently gained popularity for her works, which she calls "silver lacquer painting," featuring beautiful patterns that resemble thin silver leaf fluttering in the wind. Many pottery enthusiasts will likely nod in agreement when they hear about works that won the Grand Prize at the "Kikuchi Biennale X" or the Tokyo Governor's Award at this year's "East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition." While admiring the latest silver lacquer artwork in the workshop, I was amazed when I learned about the production method. Cutting and applying the silver leaf in thin strips must be quite a difficult task, but apparently, it's fired in an electric kiln in seven separate stages. According to Wakabayashi, the electricity bill is quite high (laughs)...
Now, in this long-awaited exhibition, our gallery's first ever, we will be presenting over 130 beautiful yet ephemeral new works, primarily focusing on pieces with silver lacquer. Even though I said I would go to the workshop from the station on my own, I was extremely grateful that you went out of your way to come and meet me at the station in the scorching heat. Together with the kind-hearted Mr. Wakabayashi, we look forward to your visit to our gallery.

| Biography Biography | 1991: Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Crafts, Ceramics Major. 1993: Completed graduate studies in Ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Fine Arts, studying under Yo Asano (until 1996). 1998: Graduated from the Faenza School of Ceramics and Art, Italy; worked as a ceramic artist in Italy (until 2001). 2007: Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (and has been selected five times since). 2008: Selected for the East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (and has been selected 10 times since). 2017: Selected for the 7th Kikuchi Biennale (and subsequently selected twice more). Selected for the 2021 Kasama Ceramic Art Grand Prize Exhibition. 2023: Grand Prize, 10th Kikuchi Biennale 2024: TOKI Oribe Encouragement Award, 16th Contemporary Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition (17th edition of the same award) 2025: Tokyo Governor's Award, 65th East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition Currently working as a ceramic artist in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
