Introduction
Introduction

Ms. Iwasa is a ceramic artist who works diligently in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture.

He is also the head priest of Tokuunji Temple, a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple.

I have had the pleasure of working with many ceramic artists, but this is the first time I've met someone who can juggle two completely different roles: ceramic artist and Buddhist priest.

Those works are not simply ceramics; they are ceramics to which silver leaf has been applied and then lacquered.

Like pottery and temple work, you effortlessly combine two seemingly difficult things—pottery and lacquerware—and I am truly impressed.

On a still chilly day in January, I visited Mr. Iwasa.

Iwasa's workshop is located almost midway between Izumo Airport and Izumo Taisha Shrine, and next to the workshop, where the ceramic artist works, is the magnificent main hall of Tokuunji Temple, which was founded in the late Edo period and serves as the workplace of the head priest.

Upon entering the workshop, a wonderful gallery space unfolds, and the latest works on display—tea bowls and flower vases—are such beautiful pieces that they bring a smile to your face.

The music playing in the workshop was jazz, which is my favorite, and since I share that taste, we enjoyed some delicious local sweets while chatting about pottery, and our conversation blossomed into a long discussion about music.

Now, for this exhibition, our first ever, we will be presenting over 100 pieces, including our latest tea ceremony ceramics and practical tableware.

The "Silver-Glazed Ink-Flow Tea Bowl" on the reverse side, which serves as the main visual for this exhibition, has a unique presence with its moist lacquer texture and subtly shimmering silver leaf.

It fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, and the vibrant green of the matcha tea will surely stand out.

We apologize for bothering you during this busy time before Golden Week, but our gallery awaits your visit, with jazz music playing softly in the background.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to Ken Mihara and Yoshiko Mihara, a ceramic artist couple who also work in Izumo and helped to connect me with Ms. Iwasa.

It is thanks to these two that our humble gallery is able to hold this exhibition.

thank you very much.
