| Introduction Introduction |
Sometimes I find myself gazing blankly at the blue sky. While clear skies are nice, there's also something beautiful about the ever-changing scenery when clouds cover the blue sky, creating a mix of blue and white. The artist we're introducing today, Yuuko Sawaya , is diligently creating beautiful porcelain pieces in Kanazawa, pieces that truly capture the ever-changing colors of the sky. Sawaya's works are created by applying layers upon layers of incredibly intricate and beautiful geometric patterns to a body he has sculpted himself, using the slip-trailing technique (a technique of applying clay mixed with water from a thin tube, much like squeezing out whipped cream). The colors used are diverse, primarily blue, but also including white, black, red, and green.
I first met Mr. Sawaya almost five years ago. I was taken by Mr. Buzan Fukushima , a leading expert in Akae (red porcelain) fine painting, to "Gallery Aya" located within "Support Workshop Kutani" in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture. We are holding a group exhibition at our gallery featuring works by people associated with Professor Takeyama, and it was at that time that we asked Ms. Sawaya to participate. I fell in love at first sight with the blue bowl that was submitted to the exhibition at that time, and that led to this solo exhibition. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Takeyama for helping to forge this connection. Thank you very much.
On a day in the tenth month of October, I visited the wonderful Sawaya Workshop, a new facility located in Kanazawa City. As a fan of Sawaya, I am thrilled to be able to enjoy delicious local sweets and tea while viewing her beautiful latest work. When the stylish, brand-new, matte black electric kiln arrived at the workshop, he was so happy that he fell asleep in front of it. I can sense your kind personality, and it's truly heartwarming.
One of the things I appreciate most about being involved in the tea ceremony is the opportunity to reflect on other people's feelings and share in their pain and joy. I'm so inadequate that I often find myself unable to do that, which frustrates me, but Ms. Sawaya possesses a beautiful heart that allows her to do so. Therefore, I find interacting with Mr. Sawaya very pleasant and enjoyable.
As the season shifts from light snow to heavy snow, our gallery will host our long-awaited first-ever exhibition of Yuuko Sawaya work. We will be presenting approximately 40 of our latest works, including tea ceremony ceramics. They're accepting submissions of not only blue works, but also white and black pieces. So, what will the weather be like tomorrow...? I would like to gaze at the sky aimlessly again and reflect on Sawaya's works.

| Biography Biography | Born in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture in 1989. Graduated from Iwate University, Faculty of Education, Department of Arts and Culture in 2012. Completed graduate studies in School Education at Joetsu University of Education in 2014. 2016: Received the 2015 Iwate Prefecture Art Award.
