I had the opportunity to judge the Kyushu/Okinawa exhibition of the Contemporary Ceramics Encouragement Award, and I was particularly impressed by the outstanding performance of the Okinawan artists, who accounted for three of the eight winning entries.
While Tsuboya ware is well-known in Okinawa, Makoto Suzuki's glossy black ceramic vase, which received an encouragement award, is an original work that is far removed from the image of the production area (a solo exhibition will be held at Kakiden Gallery from September 24th to 29th). Akashi Tomomi's work, submitted from Okinawa, a region not traditionally associated with porcelain production, demonstrates a trend of the times that transcends geographical boundaries. Yuto Matsuda's Shisa statues were praised as modern, sculptural versions of Shisa.
Mikawachi in Nagasaki Prefecture is a porcelain production area that has existed since the early Edo period, and a variety of special techniques are carefully preserved and passed down through generations. Tsukito Nakazato's works, while employing traditional techniques and patterns, are finished in a modern style, showcasing the underlying strength of Mikawachi.
Masakatsu Aoki from Okawachi, Saga Prefecture; Rui Mifuji from Karatsu; Kanjiro Moriyama from Koishiwara, Fukuoka Prefecture; and Kyoichi Matsugata from Miyazaki Prefecture are all creating captivating works while making the most of the local climate and traditions of their respective regions.

| Biography Biography | ▶ Masakatsu Aoki Born in Imari City, Saga Prefecture in 1978. In 2002, he joined a pottery studio in Okawachi-yama, where he received instruction from Seiroku Nakamura and Yukiyama Murashima. 2016: Arita International Ceramic Exhibition (Selected and awarded in 2015-2019, 2021, and 2022) Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 2017 (2018-2023) 2018: Selected for the Tanabe Museum of Art Grand Prize Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition (2019-2022) Aoki Pottery Studio opened and became independent. 2022 Arita International Ceramic Exhibition, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award Western Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Asahi Shimbun Grand Prize ▶ Kimitomo Matsukata Born in Tokyo in 1951. 1997 Selected for Kokuten 1998 Mashiko Ceramic Art Exhibition, Special Jury Prize 1999: Selected for the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition Selected for the Japan Folk Crafts Museum Exhibition in 2000. Since then, his works have been selected for and won awards at exhibitions such as the Kokuten Exhibition, the Mashiko Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the Japan Folk Crafts Museum Exhibition. 2006: Recommended as an associate member of the Kokugakai (National Painting Association) Craft Department. Kiln built in Miyazaki 2016 Member of the Kokugakai Crafts Department ▶ Tomomi Akashi Born in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture in 1990. Completed Master's Program in Ceramics at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts Graduate School in 2015. 2017: Selected for the Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition (Selected in 2021) 2018: Completed training at the Seto Sometsuke Craft Museum. 2021 Kasama Ceramic Art Grand Prize Exhibition, Special Jury Prize Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (2023 selection) Selected for the Kikuchi Biennale ▶ Yuto Matsuda Born in 1989 In 2019, I quit my job as a chef after 10 years and opened "Yachimunya" in Yomitan Village. He became an apprentice to Mitsuo Aragaki and became a Shisa craftsman. 2020 Oki Exhibition Selected 2023 Okinawa Art Exhibition - Everyone's One-of-a-Kind Award ▶ Tsutomu Nakazato Born in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture in 1967. 1988: Graduated from Saga Prefectural Arita Ceramic College, and studied under Hayao Yoshioka of Toukodo. In 1991, he studied Hirado blue and white porcelain under his father, Matsuyama Hirado, and pottery wheel shaping under Mitsuhisa Ueno. Winner of the Nissho Exhibition Grand Prize, award winner at the Nagasaki Ceramics Exhibition, and award winner at the Kyushu Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition. Awarded at the Nagasaki Ceramics Exhibition in 2003. Award winner at the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition 2013: Designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, certified as a Traditional Craftsman. ▶ Rui Mito Born in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1978. After graduating from school, I started working for a company. Graduated from the Pottery Wheel Department at Arita Ceramic College, Saga Prefecture in 2006. Studied under Kiyomi Kawakami in Karatsu. In 2009, he established the "Mitofuji Kiln" in Karatsu City and became independent. ▶ Kanjiro Moriyama Born in 1984 in Koishiwara Village, Fukuoka Prefecture (now Toho Village). Graduated from the Department of Fine Arts and Crafts, Faculty of Culture and Education, Saga University in 2007.
