What comes to mind when you think of turning 60? A red vest, 60 years old, a full cycle of the Chinese zodiac, also known as Kakou... This time, we'd like to introduce a joint exhibition by two ceramic artists who have both reached the age of 60.
First up is Sora Arimoto, a ceramic artist based in Hiroshima. He utilizes both kick wheel and hand wheel techniques, and is thoroughly dedicated to creating Shino ware tea bowls. His works are particularly striking for their dignified and powerful forms, and one can sense his strong commitment to the carefully selected, high-quality Hyakusō clay used as the raw material, as well as the gas kiln he built by hand-laying bricks.
The other is Yasushi Fujihira, who makes pottery in Kyoto. Her father, Shin Fujihira, was a renowned ceramic artist who created unique objects and vessels. Her unpretentious style has garnered many fans, and in my own home, Ms. Ning's tableware is used extensively, making mealtimes even more enjoyable.
Now, in this joint exhibition, our first ever at this gallery, we will be presenting not only the works that each artist has created so far (the two works in the foreground of the image above), but also brand new works (*) that were made using the other artist's clay and fired in the other artist's kiln. *These are the works marked as [Collaborative Work] in the "Main Exhibited Works" section below.
A mature exhibition by two artists who have reached the age of 60 and are starting a new chapter in their lives. Apparently, the two of them will be going to practice Zen meditation together in conjunction with this exhibition. Their harmonious relationship will surely make the exhibition even more pleasant. I apologize for posting this during this still-hot time of year, but I would be grateful if you would take the time to view it.

| Biography Biography | ▶ Kugen Arimoto Arimoto Kuugen Born in Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture in 1963. 1992: Began studying Shino ware on my own. In 1995, he built a workshop and a Shino-style kiln in Hiroshima City. 1997: Selected for the "Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition" (Tanabe Museum of Art) and several times thereafter. 2010 Contemporary Tea Ceremony Pottery Exhibition: TOKI Oribe Encouragement Award 2016 Prefectural Cultural Encouragement Award ▶ Fujihira Yasushi Fujihira Yasushi Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1963. His father is Shin Fujihira. 1988: Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Arts Vocational Training School 1990 Kyoto Exhibition Mayor's Award 1991: Encouragement Award at the Ceramics Biennale 1992: Selected for the Kyoto Craft Biennale and the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition. |
