| Introduction Introduction |
The sound of sandstone, known locally as mudstone, being slowly crushed in a water-powered mortar, disappeared from the valley last May. This is because Keiko Yoshino , the owner of Hazenotani Kiln, has passed away. Following in the footsteps of his father, Kai, he dedicated nearly 30 years to mastering the art of authentic Karatsu ware, but sadly passed away at the age of 51.
Kai said that "potters of the past were half-farmers and half-potters," so he dedicated himself to pottery making while cultivating fields and working in the rice paddies. Keiko also aspired to create "pottery that is not separated from nature, as if it were born from the fields."
The reason why Keiko's works are far more comforting than her more eccentric sculptural pieces is probably because of her natural and unpretentious way of life. I believe that's where Keiko's philosophy lies.
It's truly regrettable to think that this memorial exhibition will be his last solo exhibition.

| Biography Biography | Born in Imari City, Saga Prefecture in 1972. In 1996, he trained at his father Yasuyoshi Yoshino 's Hazenotani Kiln. In 1999, I installed a water-powered mortar and pestle, together with my father, Yasuyoshi. He began working on the revival of Karatsu ware (sandstone Karatsu), a type of pottery from the Momoyama period that is made by crushing stone. 2003: Studied pottery wheel techniques at Arita Ceramic College. In 2006, I studied traditional techniques in Thailand and Vietnam. Since then, he has presented his works in solo and group exhibitions in various locations.
