Introduction
Introduction

Our relationship with Masuda-ya, a tea ceremony utensil supplier, dates back to 1969 when Shinjuku Kyokaiseki Kakiden opened.

I am very pleased that a collaborative exhibition by Yoshinori Masuda and Yukiko will be held.

As a child, Masuda always envied the free and lively interactions he had with his uncle, Yasuda Yosuke, and with the ceramic artist Murayama Takeshi and Seimei Tsuji , especially through drinking.

According to his daughter, Kayoko Masuda, Yoshinori Masuda was originally a painter and was favored by Taro Okamoto and Mitsuto Tonegawa.

He visited Mexico with On Kawara and Mitsuhito Toneyama, and after seeing the paintings of Suqueiros, he felt that he could not paint anything better, and, perhaps due to a flash of genius, he switched his focus to glassmaking.

In 1954, he began glassmaking at Joetsu Crystal Glass Co., Ltd. This marked the beginning of his membership in the Sodeisha group.

Sodeisha was formed in 1948 by young ceramic artists from Kyoto, including Kazuo Yagi, Hikaru Yamada, and Osamu Suzuki. They were a group that created a completely new genre called "object pottery," which was not bound by traditional ceramics and did not have any practical use.

In 1952, at the age of 18, Masuda was pleasantly surprised by the free-spirited approach to pottery making at the "Second Sodeisha Exhibition" held at Ginza Wako, where potters were creating their works without making extensive use of the potter's wheel. This marked the beginning of his interactions with Kazuo Yagi, Hikaru Yamada, Osamu Suzuki, and others.

Whenever Mr. Kazuo Yagi came from Kyoto, he would always stay at the Masuda family's house, and his grandmother would take care of him.

It was Mr. Masuda who instructed Mr. Kazuo Yagi in glassmaking, and with his sensitivity and aesthetic sense, it is easy to imagine that he would have followed in the footsteps of Mr. Fujishichi Iwata and become a Living National Treasure.

It is a great honor to be able to hold an exhibition at our gallery featuring the works of the late Yoshinori Masuda and his daughter, Yukiko, and we are very much looking forward to seeing the collaboration between father and daughter. We hope you will come and enjoy the exhibition.
