Introduction
Introduction

For 70 years, it has been common practice in this region to fire Mikawachi ware in a gas kiln with a clear flame free of soot, in order to make the white surface of the ware even whiter and to bring out the vividness of the cobalt blue glaze.

Meanwhile, a group of volunteers quietly restored a climbing kiln that had been in use until the 1940s, and have been jointly firing it once or twice a year, albeit tentatively.

Recently, the first ever exhibition of Mikawachi ware featuring only pottery fired in a climbing kiln will be held.

I support this challenge undertaken by a region where wood-fired kilns are not the norm.

Motoki Sakai (Secretary General, Japan Ceramic Society)

Mikawachi Pottery

Porcelain pottery made in the Mikawachi district of Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture.

It originated in the early Edo period and was called "Hirado ware" at the time.

They have preserved exquisite techniques such as underglaze blue paintings of Chinese children, intricate carvings, and openwork for 400 years.
