| Introduction Introduction |
This is the first exhibition by six artists who are alumni of Tamagawa Gakuen.
Although they belong to different organizations—the 11th generation Ohi Chozaemon and Kato Reikichi are members of the Nitten Exhibition, Tokuzawa Moritoshi and Koyama Koichi are members of the Japan Crafts Association, and Matsuzaki Toru and Matsuzaki Ken are members of the Kokugakai—they are all Tamagawa alumni, nurtured by Tamagawa Gakuen's founder, Mr. Obara Kuniyoshi.
In the section on humanity and art in the teacher's book "Words to Give," it says: "Art is an expression of the self. Creation is an expression of individuality. There is no imitation in art. There is only individuality, this is a fundamental truth. It only arises from the outpouring of a vigorous inner life."
This exhibition, which connects education and art through "self-expression," is organized by alumni of Tamagawa Gakuen.
Eleventh generation Ohi Chozaemon (Toshio) Mr.He is the head of the Ohi Chozaemon Kiln, which has been passed down for over 350 years since the Edo period in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. In 2023, she received the Imperial Prize and the Japan Art Academy Prize. The "Ohi Amber Glazed Tea Bowl" is a tea bowl with the characteristic amber glaze of Ohi ware, and its calm atmosphere is particularly appealing. The "Ohi Kiln-Fired Tea Caddy" is an ambitious work by Mr. Ohi, who pursued the beauty and depth of the glaze crystals created by the kiln firing process.
Reikichi KatouMr.He is the 22nd generation of a family that has been producing Seto-Akatsu ware for over 450 years, and a ceramic artist who is active on the stage of the Nitten Exhibition. He has received numerous awards, including two Special Selection awards at the Nitten Exhibition, the Tokai Television Award at the Ceramics Biennale, and the Prime Minister's Award and the Japan Industrial Technology Association Grand Prize at the Japan Industrial Technology Association Exhibition. The "Azure-Colored Flower Vase" is a flower vase inspired by bronze vessels, featuring a brilliant blue glaze and gold and silver accents. The "Momokasai Tea Bowl" is a tea bowl adorned with peaches, a fruit that symbolizes longevity and good fortune.
Kouichi KoyamaHe is a highly skilled artist with a kiln in Tokyo, and has received the Japan Crafts Association Award at the 39th, 43rd, and 48th "Traditional Crafts Ceramics Division Exhibition," and the Grand Prize at the 3rd "Ceramic Art Exhibition." The "Colored Swallow-Shaped Vase" is a work that incorporates a technique called "Shōenji," which uses gold to produce a pink color. The "Colored Swallow and Cherry Blossom Incense Burner" uses the same technique, but it depicts two types of patterns: cherry blossoms and bamboo leaves.
Moritoshi TokusawaHe seeks out scenes that are "sometimes like a waterfall bathed in sunlight" and "sometimes like the aurora borealis on a frozen night," and pursues forms that make the most of the flow of the glaze in Korean Karatsu ware. At the 54th "Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition," the "Korean Karatsu Water Jar" won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award and was purchased by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The "Korean Karatsu Vase" is a magnificent and imposing piece. On the other hand, the "Tang Dynasty Black Tea" is a groundbreaking and unprecedented challenge.
Ken MatsuzakiHe is a beloved disciple of the Living National Treasure, Tatsuzo Shimaoka, and is one of the leading contemporary ceramic artists in Mashiko. The firing process involves using 3,000 bundles of firewood and 50 bales of charcoal to fire the pottery for eight days, a technique known as "kiln transformation." The "Kiln-fired Ash-glazed Ceramic Stone Flower Vase" is a kiln-fired piece that utilizes the faceted technique to bring out the natural texture of the clay. The "Kiln-fired Soda and Gosu Tea Bowl" is made by mixing soda and gosu into the clay and firing it, resulting in a unique aesthetic with the blue of the gosu and the ash glaze.
Tooru MatsuzakiHis lacquerware is not flashy, superficially beautiful, but rather lacquerware that is closely integrated into daily life, and whose character deepens the more it is used. It is said that the artwork will last for a hundred years. The "Vermilion Lacquer Flower-Shaped Water Jar" is a work of art in which the artist has communicated with the wood material, applied multiple layers of lacquer, and polished the surface to bring it to life. The "Vermilion Lacquer Tea Set" is a Kinrinji-style tea set made from zelkova wood, and its gentle finish is very appealing.

| Biography Biography | ▶ Eleventh generation Chozaemon Ohi (Toshio) Ohi Chozaemon Born in Kanazawa in 1958 as the eldest son of the 10th generation Ohi Chozaemon. 1981: Graduated from Tamagawa University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Arts. 1984: Completed Master's program (M.F.A.) at Boston University. 2002: Received a "Special Selection" award at the 34th Nitten Exhibition; 2005: Received another "Special Selection" award at the 37th Nitten Exhibition. In 2007, I received the tea name "Sōen" from the head of the Urasenke school, Zabosai. 2013: Invited artist at the 7th Gyeonggi World Ceramics Biennale, South Korea. 2015: 54th Japan Contemporary Craft Art Exhibition, Grand Prize: "Prime Minister's Award" In 2016, he succeeded to the name of the 11th generation Ohi Chōzaemon and became an advisory member to the Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs. 2020: Member of the Expert Committee, Crafts Gallery, National Museum of Modern Art, Japan 2021 8th Nitten “Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award (Highest Award)” 2022: Awarded the Knight's Cross of Merit of Hungary, a Hungarian National Order of Merit. 2023 Imperial Prize and Japan Art Academy Prize ▶ Reikichi Kato Kato Reikichi Born in 1953 as the 22nd generation of the Kato family, who have been engaged in the pottery business since the Keicho era. Graduated from Tamagawa University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Arts, Ceramics Major. 2022: 9th Nitten Exhibition, Tokyo Governor's Award In 2023, I was invited by the Agency for Cultural Affairs to exhibit at the Japan-China-Korea Art Festival 2023 Contemporary Crafts Exhibition. Appointed as vice representative of Japan Trade Union Currently, he is a special member of the Nitten Exhibition, a permanent director of the Seto Ceramic Art Association, a trustee of the Seto City Cultural Promotion Foundation, and a visiting professor at Tokai Gakuen University. ▶ Koichi Koyama Koyama Koichi Born in 1960 in Taito Ward, Tokyo. 1983: Graduated from Tamagawa University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Art, Ceramics Course, and joined the Japan Ceramics Club. 1990: Left the Japan Ceramic Art Club and built a kiln in Ryusen, Taito-ku, Tokyo. 1997: The 38th East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition 1998: The 45th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition 2000: Encouragement Award, 38th Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition 2003: 43rd Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition, Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education Award 2010: 50th East Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Japan Crafts Association Award Lecture on Lucie Rie's Glazing Techniques at the National Art Center, Tokyo 2015 3rd Ceramics Exhibition Grand Prize 2020: 48th Traditional Crafts Ceramics Exhibition, Japan Crafts Association Award ▶ Moritoshi Tokusawa Tokusawa Moritoshi Born in 1943 in Kyoto City, Tokyo. Graduated from Tamagawa University, Faculty of Agriculture in 1967. Studied under Mu'an Nakazato, a Living National Treasure of Karatsu ware. In 1972, he established his own kiln in Sarayama, Sue-machi, Kasuya-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture. 1975: Instructor at Asahi Culture Center 1977: First selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition; subsequently selected 31 times. In 1983, became a full member of the Japan Crafts Association. 2007: 54th Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award; Purchased by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. 2010: Excellence Award, 3rd Chisho Museum Grand Prize Exhibition 2012: 40th Traditional Crafts Ceramics Exhibition, Japan Crafts Association Award 2015: Encouragement Award, 32nd Tabe Museum Grand Prize, Exhibition of Art in the Tea Ceremony. ▶ Ken Matsuzaki Matsuzaki Ken Born in Tokyo in 1950, the third son of Japanese painter Matsuzaki Shuki. In 1972, after graduating from Tamagawa University, Department of Art, specializing in ceramics, he became a disciple of Tatsuzo Shimaoka. In 1977, a kiln was built in Mashiko Town, and it continues to operate there to this day. 1978: Solo exhibition at Keio Department Store, Shinjuku branch (and annually thereafter) 1986: Member of Kokugakai (National Painting Association) 2002: Solo exhibition at PUCKER GALLERY BOSTON in Boston (and every other year thereafter). In 2003, exhibited at the "Oribe - Japanese Art in Transition" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. 2007: Solo exhibition at Goldmark Gallery, UK (and every other year thereafter) 2009 Hankyu Department Store 30th Anniversary Exhibition: From Kiln Transformation to Iridescence - Ken Matsuzaki Ceramic Art Exhibition Workshop at Clay College Stoke, UK, 2017 In 2021, "Ken Matsuzaki Pottery Exhibition: The World of Kiln Transformations - 50th Anniversary of Pottery Making" was held at the Special Art Gallery of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store. ▶ Toru Matsuzaki Matsuzaki Toru Born in 1944 in Umegaoka, Tokyo. Graduated from Tamagawa University, Faculty of Letters in 1967. In 1974, he received instruction from ceramic artist Tatsuzo Shimaoka. 1983: Received the Kokugakai Newcomer Award, and held his first solo exhibition at Seibu Department Store, Ikebukuro Main Store (held annually thereafter). 1985: Solo exhibition at Nagoya Meitetsu Department Store (held every other year thereafter) 1988: Became a member of the Kokugakai (National Painting Association).
