| Introduction Introduction |
On a still cool day in June, I headed west. I went to visit brothers Shuusaku Kaneshige and Yosaku, who are Bizen ware potters. I rented a car at Okayama Airport and pressed the accelerator pedal, heading straight for Ibe in Bizen City. Despite the sudden downpour, the two of them greeted me with smiles, and as we celebrated our reunion, they invited me into their beautiful garden, saying, "Mr. Yasuda, this way," where I was greeted by lovely lilies. "Only one flower bloomed," Shusaku said with a shy smile. Sitting on the veranda overlooking the lilies, I enjoyed a delicious Minazuki (a type of Japanese sweet) made by the wife, and savored a cup of tea from their tea bowl. My heart relaxed and my mind was at peace.
Toukoubou Yuu (formerly Toukoubou) is a Bizen ware pottery studio established 12 years ago by Shusaku and Yosaku, sons of the renowned Bizen ware craftsman Yuuhou Kaneshige , and their apprentice, Osamu Saitou . Last year, Mr. Saitou became independent, and now the two brothers work together harmoniously on their creations.
Now, time flies, and this will be our fifth exhibition at our gallery, where we will present our latest works of tableware that are exceptionally comfortable to use, as well as tea ceremony ceramics such as tea bowls that have become increasingly elegant in recent years. Furthermore, their long-awaited tea ceremony will be held on August 25th (Friday) in the tea room of Shinjuku Kakiden above our gallery. I once had the opportunity to work with you both in the kitchen, and I was deeply impressed by your impeccable manners and thoughtful consideration. These two are walking the path of the tea ceremony with unwavering determination and conviction. We would be delighted if you could attend.
As we enter the end of summer and hope the lingering heat will subside, we would be grateful if you could offer your frank and unreserved guidance to the Kaneshige brothers.
