| Introduction Introduction |
"First Raku, second Hagi, third Karatsu." Hagi ware is such an indispensable pottery region for the tea ceremony that it's often said in this way about tea bowls used in the tea ceremony.
Although we refer to it simply as "Hagi ware," it is actually divided into two parts: kilns in Hagi City and kilns in Nagato City, which is located west of Hagi City. The kiln of Masahiro Sakakura , whom we will introduce today, is located in Nagato City. Near the kiln is Nagato Yumoto Onsen, a famous hot spring that I also love, and countless fireflies are probably flitting about in the Otozure River that flows nearby, around the time of June when I am writing this humble piece. I also once saw the fireflies in that region, and the sea of light was beyond imagination; it was breathtaking and completely captivated me.
Masahiro Sakakura is the successor to the 15th generation Shinbei Sakakura, and he is steadily pursuing the paths of pottery making and the tea ceremony. Three years ago, in the summer, we were filled with gratitude when you chose our still-developing gallery as the venue for your precious first solo exhibition.
This exhibition will feature 120 pieces, including my latest works of tea ceremony ceramics. The tea bowl shown in the photo above, which you sent for the invitation, was a truly wonderful bowl that made me jump for joy. The highlights are the firebox and the bebebe (a type of kiln) with its distinctive mouth section near the elevated area, and its compact, somewhat small appearance also gives it a sense of tension. As always, the unique Masahiro glaze has turned out beautifully, and I'm sure you'll be able to enjoy a truly delicious cup of tea with it. The true essence of Masahiro's work lies in his preservation of the ancient Hagi style while adding his own fresh and innovative touch, and his bold ventures into creating not only tea ceremony ceramics but also sculptures and other forms of art.
Masahiro, whose warm and kind personality has captured the hearts of pottery lovers, is also scheduled to be present at the gallery. We apologize for holding this exhibition during the hottest part of the year, but we would be grateful if you would take the time to view our work and offer your honest and critical guidance to our young potters. I, too, hope to visit Masahiro-san again someday, soak in the hot springs of Nagato, and go to see the fireflies along the Otogawa River...
