| Biography Biography | Born in Shimo-ya Nichomachi in 1916 (Taisho 5). 1935 Graduated from Aoyama Normal School, taught at Yokogawa General Elementary School He died in a state of suspended animation during the Tokyo air raids on March 10, 1945. 1950: Began working as a calligrapher. In 1952, he severed ties with the calligraphy world and formed the Bokujinkai (Ink Artists Association). 1957: Exhibited at the São Paulo Biennial. 1958: Represented Japan at the Brussels World's Fair commemorative exhibition, "50 Years of Modern Art." Numerous works exhibited overseas during the 1960s. 1971: Became principal of Asahi Elementary School in Samukawa Town, Kanagawa Prefecture; retired in 1976. He passed away suddenly on June 15, 1985, from liver cirrhosis, at the age of 69. A retrospective exhibition of his work toured public art museums throughout Japan, starting with the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, following his death. Large-scale exhibitions are held in Germany, Switzerland, the United States, and more recently, in various parts of China, the birthplace of writing.
