One day in December, before the COVID-19 pandemic. We held a tea ceremony at the Zangetsutei tea house in Shinjuku Kakiden. The hanging scroll features the two characters "Omoshiro" (interesting) from Yasunari Kawabata's work, and in front of it is a striking flower vase named "Yo" (pregnant) by Kouichirou Isezaki , a master craftsman of Bizen ware. By adding plenty of white camellias to this "Harami" (pregnant) base, a truly "interesting" alcove was created. (You can see this floor design by clicking "View this exhibition's DM" below; it will appear on the stamp area of the address side.) "Harami" is a unique vessel created by Koichiro, who skillfully flattened a lump of clay. It beautifully showcases flowers and is one of my five favorite flower vases.
Now, we will be holding Koichiro's exhibition for the first time in two and a half years. Koichiro's works undergo a long firing process of eight days. During this time, they continuously add firewood, so I really admire the kiln-firing process. The works produced through this long firing process possess both style and dignity, exuding a powerful presence that makes them instantly recognizable as his work. The other day, I brought my latest creation, a white tea bowl (pictured above), into the dimly lit tea room at Kakiden. With its straightforward form and the slightly undulating rim, this teapot exudes an indescribable tea-like charm, and I'm sure it would make for a truly delicious cup of matcha.
This exhibition will feature approximately 60 of my latest works, including tea bowls and flower vases. Koichiro, who is loved by everyone for his unpretentious personality, is also scheduled to be present at the gallery. We apologize for sending this information during the current pandemic, but we would be grateful if you would take the time to read it.
I hope that one day I can use "Harami" again and enjoy the tea ceremony with everyone, just like in the old days. It's rare to come across a flower vase that makes you so happy just thinking about what to arrange in it next...

| Biography Biography | Born in 1974 in Ibe, Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki. Graduated from Tokyo Zokei University, Department of Sculpture in 1996. 1998: Moved to the United States and studied under Jeff Japiro, a ceramic artist residing in New York. In 2000, after returning to Japan, he studied under his father, Jun Isezaki. 2009: Encouragement Award at the 26th Tabe Museum of Art Exhibition of Art in the Art of the Tea Ceremony (2012, 2016) 2010: 53rd Japan Traditional Crafts Chugoku Branch Exhibition, Japan Crafts Association Award 2014: 15th Fukutake Cultural Encouragement Award Kouichirou Isezaki Exhibition 2020: Coming to fruition (LIXIL Gallery, Tokyo) |

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. 1. A request to our valued customers We have placed alcohol-based hand sanitizer at the entrance of our gallery and the building. We kindly ask that you disinfect your hands upon arrival. Please wear a mask when you go out. Currently, if you have a fever or are feeling unwell, we kindly ask that you refrain from visiting the gallery. If you have visited a doctor or taken medication for fever or a cold within the past two weeks, or if you have traveled abroad, we kindly ask that you refrain from visiting the gallery. To help reduce crowding in the store, we kindly ask that you visit in small groups whenever possible. We regret to inform you that, for the time being, we will be suspending the tea service, including gyokuro tea, which we previously offered to our customers during the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. What our gallery is working on We installed a high-performance ventilation system, "Lossnay" (manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric), in our gallery on January 6, 2021. This new, powerful ventilation system ensures that all the air in our gallery is replaced every 15 to 20 minutes. In addition, the entrance door is kept open at all times to ensure even better ventilation. We have installed a new carbon dioxide concentration meter on the counter, effective April 2nd. Generally, our gallery's carbon dioxide meter shows readings of 450-550 ppm (the average carbon dioxide concentration indoors is approximately 1,000 ppm), so please rest assured and enjoy your time at our gallery. • For hand sanitizing, we use disinfectant solution from Shiseido. It contains moisturizing ingredients that are gentle on the hands, and has been well-received by our customers. We will further strengthen our daily cleaning procedures. We regularly disinfect with alcohol on frequently touched surfaces such as elevator buttons, tables and chairs, entrance door and toilet handles, brushes and pens, even during business hours. If our gallery becomes crowded with many visitors and we determine that it is becoming too close to the public, we may ask you to limit entry to the gallery. Our gallery staff will wear masks, undergo temperature checks and health monitoring, and thoroughly disinfect their hands with alcohol while serving customers. On March 30, 2021, all staff members underwent PCR testing (at Nishitan Clinic), and all tested negative. We will continue to conduct PCR tests throughout the year. |
