| Introduction Introduction |
On March 27, 1689 (Genroku 2), Matsuo Basho, accompanied by his disciple Sora, departed from Fukagawa in Edo. This was the beginning of his travelogue, "The Narrow Road to the Deep North." It was on April 3rd that I visited the Kanokohata Suito peach tree in Kurobane, Nasu, after traveling from Senju through Kasukabe, Kanuma, and Nikko. A kasen (linked verse) performance is being held here. A kasen is a 36-verse linked verse, starting with the opening verse, followed by the exchange of verses from the second verse to the final verse. If the preceding phrase is a long phrase (5-7-5 syllables), a short phrase (7-7 syllables) is added; if it is a short phrase, a long phrase is added.
Since this year's "Hagi Denryu III" will be held in April, I have suggested that each person write a free piece, with the six verses on the front and the six verses on the back of the "Magusa Ou" linked verse, which was performed in Nasu in the same month of April, and the former being tea. Since none of the six had any experience with linked verse, I was worried about what kind of response I would get, but fortunately, everyone replied that they would like to take on the challenge. However, whether this proposal will be successful or unsuccessful remains to be seen until the work is completed.
I was once told by Kenzo Koga of the Institute for Tea Ceremony Culture, "The tea ceremony is literature. That's why all the tea masters of the past enjoyed renga (linked verse)," which reminded me of the "renga under the cherry blossoms" of the medieval period. In spring, at linked verse gatherings held under the cherry blossoms to mourn the dead, Buddhist monks act as the participants, leading the discussion, while ordinary people participate anonymously, wearing straw hats, when submitting their verses. That is said to be the origin of the custom of sharing drinks in the tea ceremony. Since all six of the participants in the "Hagi Tradition Exhibition" enjoy the tea ceremony, it would certainly not be a waste of time to try to socialize with them in this way.
In the linked verse, Basho composed the opening verse: "A man grazing on fodder in the summer field, breaking off branches." The season is summer. The opening verse serves as the greeting at the beginning of the collection, so its form and status are highly valued. Akihiro Shinjouof≪Tea bowl name “Ki”≫It is a dignified piece that respects the tradition of Hagi ware, befitting a haiku. While "maki" refers to pasture grass, the artist expresses elegance through carved patterns resembling pampas grass. Free choice≪Dish name “Shiranami”≫The design is inspired by the two farewell verses composed by Nisun: "The white waves of the waterfall scatter the washed rice."
The wakiku, which follows the hokku, has the role of complementing the hokku and is written in the same season as the hokku. In the linked verse, Suito writes, "A chestnut leaf spills green raspberries." The meaning of the haiku is that, unable to offer any hospitality, the host placed raspberries on a chestnut leaf as a substitute for a tray, but the raspberries spilled out. It conveys a sense of humility, as if saying, "I am still immature, like a green raspberry." Shin'ichi Tamamuraof≪Hagi tea bowl inscribed “Fukubonko”≫The design deliberately uses a subtle, pale pink to represent raspberries. The free-form piece is inspired by Momori's poem, "The last day of spring as Yayoi ends," and expresses her wish for the end of the coronavirus, the greatest calamity of our time.≪Hagi Incense Burner, inscribed "Sayaka"≫It was released.
The third line is a sudden reversal of fortune. In the linked verse, Sora wrote, "A sudden shower blows through the temporary huts of the market." The season is miscellaneous. It depicts the scene of a market closing down as a sudden shower begins to fall. Masahiro Sakakuraof≪The name of the bowl is “Fengfu”≫It is shaped using a hammering technique that is not bound by Hagi tradition, and the movement of the wind is expressed with brushstrokes, resulting in a magnificent transformation. Free choice≪Object "Sun Worshippers"≫This monument combines the sun, a natural element, with the human body, drawing inspiration from the lingering opening line of a haiku by Basho: "Today again, I worship the rising sun from atop a stone."
The fourth line and subsequent lines are simple verses. For the fourth line, simplicity and lightness are desirable. In the linked verse, Basho wrote, "The moon flows through the town, its sound echoing like a river." It is autumn. It is eerily quiet, and only the sound of the river can be heard.Mr. Yasushi Okadaof≪White-glazed tea bowl with green accents, inscribed "Kawaoto" (River Sound)≫This represents the sound of the river. The clear blue is beautiful on top of the white glaze.≪Pale blue glaze flower ware inscribed “Aoi Butterfly Flower”≫This depicts a scene of flowers fluttering like butterflies, inspired by the five verses at the end of the poem in which Akigarasu wrote, "Leaving my unusual journey behind among the flowers."
The fifth line is,Takao TaharaThe silhouette of the chopsticks hawk was boldly sculpted.≪Yukage tea bowl inscribed “Chopsticktaka”≫That is the case. In Kasen
Suito wrote the poem, "Enjoying the cool evening air while holding chopsticks and a hawk." This piece, unconstrained by traditional Hagi ware, beautifully captures the scene of an autumn evening. Free choice≪Glaze flower vase with inscription “Hagumo”≫This is derived from the last three verses of Sora's poem, "The flag flutters like clouds," and expresses the way the flag flutters like clouds.
In the linked verse, the sixth line is composed by Sora: "A katabira (a type of robe) painted with autumn grasses." The season is autumn.Yuuta Sakaof≪A kneaded and patched tea bowl, inscribed "Dyed Katabira"≫It is made by cutting out a part of a tea bowl that has been hand-formed from white clay and gluing together striped pieces made by layering various types of clay. The design is inspired by the image of a kimono dyed with natural plant dyes. Free choice≪Princess - Oni-do Nerikomi Flower Vase, inscribed "Oku no Fuga" (Elegance of the Inner World)≫In the final four verses of the ceremonial poem, Shirin wrote, "I will write down the elegance of the inner world in my writing," and the refined elegance is expressed through the kneaded pattern that emphasizes the ridges.
Please look forward to the new challenges of the six participants in "Hagi Denryu III".

| notice Notice | ■ Information about the special exhibition in the tea room We had originally planned a commemorative tea ceremony with the theme of "travel" for Thursday, April 15th, but unfortunately, we had to cancel it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the utensils that were intended for use in the tea ceremony will be set up in the Kakiden Tea Room and displayed as a special exhibition. We hope you will take the time to see it in conjunction with the exhibition at the gallery. ・Date and time: Thursday, April 15, 2021 11:00-18:00 • Venue: Kakiden 9th floor, Shinjuku, Tea Room "Zangetsutei" (same building as our gallery) Membership fee: Free ■Possibility of changes to the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic We regret to inform you that, given the current COVID-19 situation, if we are asked to further restrict business operations, we may have to change the exhibition period and hours, or in the worst-case scenario, hold the exhibition online only. We would appreciate your understanding. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we will be posting the latest information on this website, so we would appreciate it if you would check it regularly. ■ Measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 To ensure that all visitors can enjoy their time at our gallery with greater peace of mind, we are implementing the following measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. 1. A request to our valued customers We have placed alcohol-based hand sanitizer at the entrance of our gallery and the building. We kindly ask that you disinfect your hands upon arrival. Please wear a mask when you go out. Currently, if you have a fever or are feeling unwell, we kindly ask that you refrain from visiting the gallery. If you have visited a doctor or taken medication for fever or a cold within the past two weeks, or if you have traveled abroad, we kindly ask that you refrain from visiting the gallery. To help reduce crowding in the store, we kindly ask that you visit in small groups whenever possible. We regret to inform you that, for the time being, we will be suspending the tea service, including gyokuro tea, which we previously offered to our customers during the COVID-19 pandemic. 2. What our gallery is working on We installed a high-performance ventilation system, "Lossnay" (manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric), in our gallery on January 6, 2021. This new, powerful ventilation system ensures that all the air in our gallery is replaced every 15 to 20 minutes. In addition, the entrance door is kept open at all times to ensure even better ventilation. We have installed a new carbon dioxide concentration meter on the counter, effective April 2nd. Generally, our gallery's carbon dioxide meter shows readings of 450-550 ppm (the average carbon dioxide concentration indoors is approximately 1,000 ppm), so please rest assured and enjoy your time at our gallery. • For hand sanitizing, we use disinfectant solution from Shiseido. It contains moisturizing ingredients that are gentle on the hands, and has been well-received by our customers. We will further strengthen our daily cleaning procedures. We regularly disinfect with alcohol on frequently touched surfaces such as elevator buttons, tables and chairs, entrance door and toilet handles, brushes and pens, even during business hours. If our gallery becomes crowded with many visitors and we determine that it is becoming too close to the public, we may ask you to limit entry to the gallery. Our gallery staff will wear masks, undergo temperature checks and health monitoring, and thoroughly disinfect their hands with alcohol while serving customers. On March 30, 2021, all staff members underwent PCR testing (at Nishitan Clinic), and all tested negative. We will continue to conduct PCR tests throughout the year. We sincerely look forward to your visit to our gallery. |
